First Korean soars into space

BAIKONUR, Kazahkstan - Korea now has an astronaut of its own. With a roar, the Soyuz spacecraft carrying Yi So-yeon lifted off into clear skies above Kazakhstan yesterday at 8:16 p.m. sharp, Seoul time. Racing into the atmosphere at a speed of 8 kilometers (5 miles) a second, the spacecraft reached orbit above the Earth in 8 minutes and 48 seconds.

바이코누르, 카자흐스탄 ? 드디어 한국의 우주인이 탄생했다. 굉음을 내며 이소연씨를 태운 소유스 우주선이 한국시간 어제 오후 8시16분 카자흐스탄의 맑은 하늘로 솟아 올랐다. 초당 8 킬로미터(5마일) 속도로 대기권으로 날아 올라 우주선은 8분48초 만에 지구 궤도로 진입했다.
With joyful cries from a batch of Korean officials and a cheering squad, the revelers hugged each other to celebrate the country’s first space mission. Amid all the fuss, tears rolled down the cheek of Yi’s mother. She had been sitting in front of an observation platform located near the launch pad.

한국정부 관계자들과 응원단원들이 환호성을 올리며 서로 껴안으면서 한국의 첫 번째 우주비행을 축하했다. 떠들썩한 축제분위기에서 이소연씨의 어머니 눈에서는 감격의 눈물이 흘렀다. 이씨의 어머니는 발사대 가까이에 위치한 전망대 앞쪽에 앉아 있었다.
With Yi So-yeon’s ascent, Korea became the 36th country to send someone into space. Yi is the nation’s first astronaut. “I’m so glad that Yi will take the first step in space with the dreams and high expectations of the Koreans,” said Park Jong-koo, vice minister for Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. “This project will accelerate Korea’s space development.”
이씨의 성공적 우주비행으로 한국은 세계 36번째로 우주인을 배출한 국가가 됐다. 이씨는 한국의 첫 번째 우주인이다. 박종구 교육과학기술부 제2차관은 “이소연씨가 한국인들의 높은 기대와 꿈을 안고 우주로 첫 발을 내딛게 돼서 기쁘다. 이 프로젝트로 한국의 우주개발 참여에 가속도가 붙을 것이다.”고 말했다.

DPA통신에 따르면 최초 여성우주인인 러시아의 발렌티나 테레시코바가 발사준비에 참여해서 이씨의 성공적 우주비행을 빌어줬다. 소유스 우주선은 시간당 2만8천 킬로미터를 지구궤도를 날면서 90분 마다 지구를 한 바퀴씩 돈다.
It is set to dock at the International Space Station tomorrow.
Starting Friday, Yi has trained four hours a day to get accustomed to a state of weightlessness. During times of zero gravity, astronauts can experience motion sickness.

내일 국제우주전거장과 도킹할 예정이다. 금요일부터 이씨는 무중력 상태에 익숙해지려고 하루 4시간 동안 훈련을 받아왔었다. 무중력 상태에서 우주인들은 멀미를 겪을 수 있다.
