Korea is bustling site for Olympic training

With the 2008 Beijing Olympics just around the corner, various parts of South Korea are in special demand.

2008년 베이징 올림픽 개막이 임박하면서 한국의 여러 지역들이 올림픽 특수를 누리고 있다.
Teams from a number of countries participating in the Beijing Olympics are flooding into Korean locales that have world-class training facilities that are far from the Chinese capital’s pollution. And the best part: they are only a short hop away from the real action.

베이징 올림픽에 참가하는 여러 국가대표팀들이 중국 수도와 달리 대기오염도 없으면서 세계적 수준의 훈련시설들을 갖춘 한국의 지방도시들로 밀려들고 있다. 그리고 가장 좋은 점은 올림픽 경기 개최지에서 아주 가깝다는 것이다.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and regional governments, some 2,500 athletes from 42 countries - including Greece, Canada, Russia, Japan and the United States - are currently here or are planning to come to train in various Korean locations.
문화체육관광부와 지방정부에 따르면, 그리스, 캐나다, 러시아, 일본 그리고 미국 등을 포함한 42개국 2천5백여 명의 선수들이 한국의 여러 지역에서 현재 전지훈련을 하고 있거나 할 예정이다.
Jeju Island is one of the hot spots. Located below the southern edge of the Korean Peninsula, the island has already seen 680 foreign athletes from 15 countries come to train since the beginning of the year.

가장 인기를 끄는 곳은 제주도이다. 올해 초부터 15개국 680명의 외국 선수들이 한반도 남단 아래쪽에 위치한 이 섬에서 이미 전지훈련을 했다.
Another 100 athletes are expected to arrive in the island for the Iron Man Triathlon. They will represent 15 countries including Brazil, Russia, Australia, Denmark, the United States, Spain and Germany. Reasons given for choosing Jeju include its clean environment, well-established sports and housing facilities and an optimal landscape for triathlon training.

철인3종 경기에 참가하는 선수 1백 여명도 이 섬을 방문할 예정이다. 그들은 브라질, 러시아, 호주, 덴마크, 미국, 스페인, 독일 등 15개국의 국가대표 선수들이다. 그들이 제주도를 선택한 이유는 환경이 깨끗하고 체육시설과 숙박시설이 잘 갖춰져 있는데다 지리적 조건까지 철인3종 경기 훈련을 위해 최상이기 때문이다.
Jeju has a regular marathon course along a 180-kilometer-long coastal road and every coastal road in the island is linked to 10 designated swimming beaches, offering a great place for complex triathlon training that includes swimming, long-distance running and cycling.
제주도에는 180 킬로미터에 이르는 해안도로를 따라 정규 마라톤 코스가 있고 각 해안도로들이 10개의 지정 해수욕장과 연결돼 있어 철인3종 경기인 수영, 장거리 달리기, 자전거 달리기를 복합적으로 훈련하기엔 최적의 장소이다.

Meanwhile, Chuncheon, the famous lake city in Gangwon Province, has been hosting an advance party of 48 from the Dutch rowing team since July 18 and will have 177 long-staying Dutch rowers before long.

한편, 호반의 도시 강원도 춘천에는 7월18일부터 네덜란드 조정선수단 선발대 48명이 전지훈련을 하고 있으며 곧 네덜란드 조정선수단 177명이 장기체류로 들어올 것이다.
“Chuncheon is not far from Beijing and the city has similar levels of humidity and weather conditions as in Beijing. Also, Uiam Lake [in Chuncheon] is clean and wide so that a number of rowing teams can practice simultaneously, which is very handy,” said Gwen Bakker, the Dutch rowing team manager.

네덜란드 조정팀 가웬 바커 매니저는 “춘천은 베이징에서 멀지 않고 습기와 날씨가 베이징과 비슷하다. 또 의암호는 깨끗하고 넓어서 많은 조정 경기팀들이 동시에 연습을 할 수 있어 매우 편리하다.”고 말했다.
