Park captures Korea’s first-ever medal in Olympic swimming

Park Tae-hwan captured the gold medal in the men’s 400-meter freestyle swim at the 2008 Beijing Olympics yesterday. It is Korea’s first Olympic swimming medal of any kind and its third gold in Beijing.

어제 다른 경기에서는 한국 여자 양궁팀이 결승전에서 중국팀을 224 대 215로 꺾고 올림픽 6연승 위업을 달성했다. 윤진희 선수가 여자 53kg급 역도에서 은메달을 들어 올렸다.
At the National Aquatics Center Swimming Pool, Park, 18, finished in three minutes, 41.86 seconds, the second-fastest time ever in the 400-meter freestyle behind Ian Thorpe’s 3:40.08 in 2002. Park’s time is also an Asian record.

Usually known for his last-minute spurt, Park, who qualified as the third-fastest swimmer in the heats, took an early lead and never looked back. He touched the 100-meter turn at 54.07, 0.10 seconds behind the leader Hackett, but Park was up by 0.03 seconds at the 150-meter mark.

예선전 3위로 결선에 진출한 박은 평소 막판 스퍼트에 강한 것으로 알려져 있으나 이날 경기에서는 일찍 선두로 앞서 나갔고 한번도 뒤쳐지지 않았다. 박은 100미터 지점을 해켓보다 0.10초 뒤진 54초07로 통과했으나 150미터 지점에서는 0.03초 앞섰다.
With 100 meters left, Park was 0.90 seconds up on Hackett, and the young Korean was unthreatened the rest of the way. The swimmer said he is not done. “This is just a start,” said Park, who will also compete in the 200-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle. “I am hungry for more.”
100미터를 남겨두고서는 박태환은 해켓보다 0.90초 앞서 있었고, 그 이후로 전혀 선두자리를 위협받지 않았다. 박태환은 아직 끝나지 않았다고 말했다. 200미터와 1,500미터 자유형에도 출전할 박태환은 “이것은 시작에 불과하다. 나는 아직 배가 고프다.”고 말했다.
Korea’s first gold medal came on the judo mat Saturday night. Choi Min-ho won the men’s 60-kilogram (132.3 pounds) class over Ludwig Paischer of Austria. Choi defeated Paischer and four other opponents during the day with an ippon, a decisive full point in judo that ends the match regardless of how much of the five-minute time limit is left. Choi needed only 7:40 in total to win five contests en route to the gold.

한국의 첫 금메달은 토요일 밤 유도 매트에서 나왔다. 최민호는 유도 남자 60㎏급 결승전에서 오스트리아의 루드비히 파이셔를 한판으로 이기는 등 이날 예선전 상대선수 4명을 모두 한판으로 이겼다. 한판은 유도에서 경기시간 5분 중에 남은 시간에 관계 없이 그 경기를 이기는 만점을 뜻한다. 최민호가 금메달을 딸 때까지 5번 경기를 치르는 데 걸린 총 시간은 단지 7분40초에 불과했다.
