말장난
미국 워싱턴 정계는 말장난 선수다. 여론을 자극하지 않는 완곡 어법의 대가다. 이라크의 미군 자살은 자해 행위, 미군 철수는 이동 배치로 바꾸었다. 미 의회 조사단은 ‘비리 적발’ 대신 ‘과제를 발견했다’고 표현한다. 워싱턴에서 굶주림이란 단어는 증발했다. 그 자리를 ‘식량 불안’이란 모호한 단어가 차지했다. 워싱턴에서 ‘창조적 파괴’는 탈당을 의미한다. 스캔들로 밀려나는 정치인까지 근사한 코멘트를 잊지 않는다. “이젠 가족과 더 많은 시간을 갖게 됐다”고.
