Ex-spy sees kin of kidnap victim
JoongAng Daily 1면 기사 Thursday, March 11, 2009BUSAN - In an emotional rendezvous yesterday under heavy security in this southern port city, Kim Hyun-hee, a former North Korean spy involved in the 1987 bombing of a South Korean civilian jetliner, met with the brother and son of a Japanese woman allegedly kidnapped by North Korea.

1987년 남한 민항기 폭파사건에 연루됐던 전 북한 공작원 김현희씨가 어제 이 남쪽 항구도시에서 삼엄한 경호를 받으며 납북된 일본 여성의 오빠와 아들과 감동적으로 만났다.
As part of her spy training, Kim says she had taken Japanese language and culture lessons from the woman, Yaeko Taguchi, from 1978 to 1980. This was Kim’s first public appearance in the South in 18 years. After the bombing of the Korean Air jet that killed all 115 passengers onboard, Kim was sentenced to death. That sentence was commuted in 1990.

김씨는 공작원 훈련의 일부분으로 이 일본인 여성 다구치 야에코에게 1978년부터 1980년까지 일본어와 일본 문화를 배웠다고 말한다. 이 상봉으로 김씨는 남한에서 18년 만에 처음으로 공개석상에 모습을 드러냈다. 탑승객 115명을 전원 사망케 한 대한항공 민항기 폭파사건으로 김씨는 사형선고를 받았으나, 1990년에 사면됐다.
Though officials in Pyongyang have said Taguchi was killed in a car accident in 1986, Kim asserts she is still alive. Kim had asked for the meeting so that she could offer Taguchi’s 32-year-old son, Koichiro Iizuka, and 70-year-old brother Shigeo Iizuka more information on how Taguchi lived in North Korea after she was kidnapped in 1978 at the age of 22.

북한은 다구치씨가 1986년 교통사고로 사망했다고 말해왔으나, 김씨는 그녀가 아직 살아있다고 주장한다. 김씨는 다구치씨의 아들 이즈카 고이치로씨(32)와 오빠 이즈카 시게오씨(70)에게 다구치씨가 22세 때인 1978년에 납북된 이후 북한에서 어떻게 살았는지를 더 자세하게 말해주기 위해 만남을 요청해왔었다.
Yesterday’s occasion was arranged by the governments of South Korea and Japan. At a press conference attended by hundreds of journalists from the two countries, Kim thanked both governments and said she was elated to see Taguchi’s relatives. “I wish she were here to share this joy,” a teary Kim said. “I heard back in 1987 in North Korea that Ms. Taguchi had been taken somewhere unknown. I didn’t think at the time that she’d died.”

한국정부와 일본정부가 어제 만남을 주선했다. 양국에서 온 수 백 명의 기자들이 참석한 기자회견에서 김씨는 양국 정부에 감사 했고 다구치씨의 가족들을 만나서 기쁘다고 말했다. 김씨는 눈물을 글썽이며 “그녀도 여기 와서 이 기쁨을 나눌 수 있으면 좋을텐데.”라고 말했다. “내가 1987년 북한에 있을 때 다구치씨가 어딘가로 옮겨졌다고 들었다. 당시에 나는 그녀가 죽었다고 생각하지 않았다.”
In the 1970s and ‘80s, more than 20 Japanese citizens were believed to have been abducted by the North. After years of denial, North Korea acknowledged in 2002 that it had abducted Japanese to make them teach the Japanese language to prospective North Korean secret agents. The North, however, has not accounted for all of the 13 Japanese citizens it acknowledged kidnapping.

1970년대와 80년대에 일본인 20여명이 북한으로 납치됐던 것으로 여겨진다. 수 십 년 동안 납치 사실을 부인해오다 북한 공작원들에게 일본어를 가르치기 위해 일본인들을 납치했었다고 2002년에 북한당국이 시인했다. 그러나 북한은 납치사실을 시인했던 일본인 13명에 대해 자세하게 설명하지 않고 있다.
