History through one man’s lens

But to Armenian-born Canadian portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908~2002), his art was never fortuitous. He clearly understood what he was seeking to achieve and when it was there, he recorded it.

행운이 따르는 예술가라야 걸작을 남길 수 있다고 주장하는 사람도 있을 것이다. 하지만, 아르메니아 태생으로 인물 사진을 주로 찍어온 유섭 카쉬(캐나다·1908~2002)의 작품은 결코 운이 좋아서 나온 결과가 아니었다. 그는 자신의 찍고자 하는 사진이 어떤 것인지를 분명하게 알고 있었고, 원하는 장면이 포착됐을 때, 셔터를 눌렀다.
Karsh captured momentary images of 20th-century statesmen, artists, musicians, authors and scientists, including Audrey Hepburn, Winston Churchill, Helen Keller, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein. The photographer once said that his chief joy was in photographing the great in heart, in mind and in spirit.

카쉬는 오드리 헵번, 윈스턴 처칠, 헬렌 켈러, 파블로 피카소, 알버트 아인슈타인 등 20세기의 정치가·미술가·음악가·작가, 그리고 과학자들의 순간적인 표정을 사진에 담았다. 그는 훌륭한 마음·생각, 그리고 정신을 가진 위인을 사진 찍는 것이 그의 주된 즐거움이라고 말한 적이 있다.
During his six-decade career, Karsh took photographs of 15,312 accomplished men and women and developed 150,000 negatives. Of these, around 70 portraits will be displayed at the Hangaram Art Museum in the Seoul Arts Center, southern Seoul, beginning next Wednesday. It will be the first time that Karsh’s works are exhibited here.

그는 60년간 사진작가로 일하면서 1만5312명의 위인을 촬영했다. 그가 현상한 흑백 필름만 15만 롤에 이른다. 이 가운데 70점의 사진이 서울 예술의전당 한가람미술관에서 다음주 수요일부터 전시된다. 카쉬의 작품이 한국에서 전시되는 것은 이번이 처음이다.
His portraits stand out in that his works convey not only his famous subjects but also their living environments. This aesthetic can also been seen in the works of photographers August Sander and Arnold Newman. “Within every man and woman, a secret is hidden, and as a photographer, it is my task to reveal it if I can,” Karsh wrote in his book “Karsh Portfolio” in 1976.

그의 인물사진은 유명인사 자체만 아니라 그들이 살고 있는 환경을 함께 담고 있다는 점에서 뛰어나다. 이런 미의식은 어거스트 샌더와 아놀드 뉴먼 같은 사진가의 작품에서도 발견할 수 있다. “모든 이의 내면에는 비밀이 감춰져 있습니다. 사진가로서 내가 하는 작업은 그 비밀을 드러내는 것이죠.” 카쉬는 1976년에 쓴 “카쉬 포트폴리오”라는 제목의 책에 이런 말을 남겼다.
The exhibition runs from March 4 to May 8 at the Seoul Arts Center’s Hangaram Museum. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The museum is closed every last Monday of the month. 전시회는 3월 4일부터 5월 8일까지 예술의전당 한가람미술관에서 열린다. 관람 시간은 오전 11시부터 오후 8시까지다. 한가람미술관은 매월 마지막 월요일에 휴관한다. 입장료는 어른 8000원, 청소년 6000원. 한가람미술관에 가려면 지하철 3호선 남부버스터미널역에서 내려 5번 출구로 나가면 된다. 전화 문의는 1544-1681.
