To Aug. 30: “Jo Kyu-chan Concert - A Letter From the Moon.” One of Korea’s most talented musicians will be holding a month-long concert series at Le Meilleur. Jo Kyu-chan will perform songs from a variety of genres at the shows.

Hordes of fans gathered at Jo’s concert last February at Le Meilleur. At the time, he ranked first in pre-sold tickets for two weeks straight. The show was one of the top five best-selling concerts for the entire month.

The August concert will feature many of the hits from his eight albums.

Also, he will be performing “Thank You for Saving My Life,” which pop singer Brian McKnight helped write.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Fridays, 4 and 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Tickets cost 50,000 won.

SEOUL OLYMPIC PARK, Olympic Hall

Saturday and Sunday: “SS501, the 1st Asia Tour Persona in Seoul.” SS501, one of Korea’s most popular boy bands, is kicking off its first Asian tour with two days of concerts at Seoul Olympic Park.

The Seoul concerts will be SS501’s first stop on a four-month tour to promote the group’s second album. The tour will include performances in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, China, Malaysia and Singapore, totaling 15 concerts.

Playing on the tour’s persona theme, the band’s members will be showing new sides of themselves with special solo performances during the concerts.

Fans have watched SS501 grow since the group’s 2005 debut. Band leader Kim Hyun-joong branched out and appeared on the hit show “Boys over Flowers,” while Park Jung-min, another member of the band, participated in the musical “Grease.”

Both concerts begin at 7 p.m.

Tickets range from 55,000 won ($44.54) to 99,000 won.

SEJONG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, Chamber Hall

Aug. 9: “Gong Won-young, Yang Moon-jeong Piano Duo Recital.” Two talented pianists will come together for a concert at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts on Aug. 9.

Gong Won-young, who has graced the stages and podiums of many universities, conferences, festivals and master classes in America, has returned to Korea to continue teaching at Suwon University.

Gong’s co-performer, Yang Moon-jeong, has received many awards from competitions including the University of Texas at Austin Symphony Orchestra Competition, the Sydney Wright Accompany Competition and the Mid-Texas Symphony Society Young Artist’s Piano Competition. Yang has also been playing at major stages in Korea, such as the Seoul Arts Center.

Pieces that will be played include “Russian Rhapsody” by Sergei Rachmaninoff, “Norwegian Dance” by Edvard Grieg and “Hungarian Rhapsody” by Franz Liszt.

The recital begins at 2 p.m.

Tickets start at 20,000 won.

SEOUL OLYMPIC PARK, Gymnastics Stadium

Aug. 9: “Lady Gaga - The Fame Ball Tour.” The lady who has Korean fans going gaga is coming back for a show on Aug. 9.

With her original lyrics and synthesizer work, the American singer has made a splash around the globe, leading to her first world tour.

This fashion-conscious star with an unmistakable voice drew her fans in Korea to a short, 30-minute performance last month. Lady Gaga said that the upcoming concert will be “a totally different and unprecedented performance that will be nothing like” the previous one here.

The singer added that she will perform songs at the Aug. 9 concert that she was not able to play during her last visit. Concertgoers can expect to hear her biggest hits at Seoul Olympic Park next month.

The concert begins at 7 p.m.

Tickets range from 77,000 won to 88,000 won.

MYUNGBO ART HALL

To Aug. 30: “Girl’s Night ? The Musical.” The musical that has many women calling up their girlfriends is currently playing at the Myungbo Art Hall until Aug. 30.

The story is about five women who come together in a karaoke bar and look back at their joyous and somber memories together.

These women, who have been friends since middle school, speak without any hesitation about their pain, happiness and success and the trials and tribulations they’ve encountered along the way.

Musical numbers range from hits by Shania Twain to Aretha Franklin, and the show leaves audience members feeling like they are friends with the characters.

The musical begins at 8 p.m. on weekdays except for Mondays, 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Tickets range from 30,000 won to 40,000 won.

THE NATIONAL THEATER OF KOREA, Main Hall Hae

Aug. 1 to 27: “Notre Dame de Paris.” One of the world’s most beloved musicals of all time is returning to theaters in Korea next month.

“Notre Dame de Paris,” with a Korean cast that the Hankyung described as “good enough for the French cast to go home crying,” will be following its first successful performance in 2007.

The original plot, written by Victor Hugo, is set in 15th-century France and focuses on the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda and a hunchback named Quasimodo.

The grand cathedral of Notre Dame is depicted in the play with bells weighing over 100 kilograms (220 pounds), while the rest of the set gracefully evokes the era.

Fifty-four arias and modern and classic ballet dances fill the stage for the show’s entire 130-minute run.

As the first French musical to have over 190,000 audience members attend in Korea, many musical lovers are eagerly anticipating seeing a local cast.

The musical begins at 8 p.m. on weekdays, 3 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2 and 6:30 p.m. on Sundays.

2009 HASO BAEKRYON FESTIVAL, North Jeolla Province

To Aug. 16: “2009 Haso Baekryon Festival.” The field dedicated to haso baekryon, or white lotus flowers, will be opening its doors for the Haso Baekryon Festival at Gimje in North Jeolla Province.

This festival, sure to be a treat for the eyes and other senses, will be presented in a museum-style format structured to show the true colors of white lotus flowers.

The festival includes over 50,000 square meters (538 square feet) of flowers.

In addition, there will be over eight artists showing their work at the festival.

2009 HONGCHEON WAXY CORN FESTIVAL, Gangwon Province

Aug. 1 to 8: “The 2009 Hongcheon Waxy Corn Festival.” Hongcheon County in Gangwon Province is featuring the region’s best corn in a festival that will last five days. Visitors will be able to participate in various activities like corn quizzes, corn-eating contests, corn picking and corn art.

Also, magic shows, sing-alongs and Korean folk music concerts will take place alongside abundant food offerings such as popcorn, corn rice cakes, corn noodles and corn on the cob.

Chances to buy Hongcheon corn will also be available.

The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

2009 BONGHWA EUN-UH FESTIVAL, North Gyeongsang Province

Aug. 1 to 9: “2009 Bonghwa Eun-uh Festival.” Festivities dedicated to the sweetfish of Bonghwa will be held for nine days in North Gyeongsang Province.

There will be many family-friendly activities including night fishing, the opportunity to catch sweetfish with your bare hands and visits to the cultural sites of Bonghwa.

Also, visitors will be able to participate in singing competitions, show-and-tell events and cook-offs.

The exhibition will feature information on the life cycle of the sweetfish, chances to visit fisheries and many concerts, including one by North Korean performers.

The festival will run from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
