Deaths point to growing flu epidemic

이번 주 이틀 동안 여덟 명이 신종플루로 사망하면서 신종플루의 급속한 확산에 대한 우려가 커지고 있다. 보건복지부가 지정한 신종플루 거점병원들은 환자들로 넘쳐나고 있으며 병원들은 환자 수용능력이 곧 한계에 이를 것이라고 말한다.
The Health Ministry reported yesterday another three deaths from the latest strain of the virus, including one 26-year-old female. She became the first person in her 20s to die of the new flu. Since she had been suffering from a pre-existing nervous system disease, whether or not to classify her as an already “high-risk” patient has not yet been decided.

보건복지부는 어제 26세 여성을 포함해서 추가 3명이 신종플루로 사망했다고 보고했다. 신종플루로 사망한 20대는 이번이 처음이다. 사망한 여성은 신경계통 질병을 이미 앓고 있었기 때문에 고위험군 환자로 분류할 지는 추후 결정된다.
According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the new virus was discovered in her cerebrospinal fluid, instead of respiratory organs, as it is in most cases. The center said it is now conducting close epidemiological research into her case. Others who died Tuesday were a 76-year-old woman and an 84-year-old man.

질병관리본부에 따르면, 대부분이 호흡기관에서 신종플루 바이러스가 발견되는데 이 여성의 경우는 뇌척수액에서 바이러스가 발견됐다. 질병관리본부는 이 여성의 사례를 전염병리학적으로 정밀 연구하고 있다고 말했다. 화요일에 사망한 다른 2명은 76세 할머니와 84세 할아버지이다.
From Aug. 15, the day that the first domestic case of the new flu infection was confirmed, until yesterday, the death toll has reached 28. Some 24 were in the high-risk category. The daily average of confirmed cases surpassed 4,000 last week and the health authorities estimate the figure has grown this week. Over the past week, multiple infections broke out at 870 schools nationwide.

신종플루 감염이 국내에서 처음으로 확인됐던 8월15일부터 어제까지 신종플루 사망자는 모두 28명에 이른다. 이중 24명은 고위험군이었다. 신종플루 확진 환자가 지난주부터는 매일 4천명을 넘어섰다. 보건당국은 이번 주에는 이 숫자가 더욱 늘어날 것이라고 추정했다. 지난주에는 전국 870개 학교에서 집단감염이 발생했다.
“Between 20 and 50 percent of A(H1N1) deaths overseas were people who were normally healthy, although there are some fluctuations among countries,” said Kwon Joon-wook, an official with the disease control center. “Given that even those in the non-high-risk category are exposed to the risk of catching the flu with the rapid spread of the disease, it is recommended that anyone showing symptoms should visit a hospital, get diagnosed and take antiviral medication.”

질병관리본부 권준욱 전염병관리팀장은 “나라에 따라 조금씩 다르지만, 해외에서는 신종플루 사망자의 20%~50%는 평소에 건강한 사람들이었다. 신종플루가 빠르게 확산하면서 고위험군이 아니더라도 신종플루에 감염될 위험성에 노출돼 있으므로 증상이 나타나면 즉시 병원을 찾아가서 진단을 받고 항바이러스 약을 처방 받기를 권한다”고 말했다.
