GM head seeks KDB aid for its local unit

GM CEO Fritz Henderson yesterday met for 90 minutes with Min Euoo-sung, president of the state-run Korea Development Bank, the key creditor of GM Daewoo Auto and Technology. The meeting came a week after the bank threatened not to roll over loans or provide fresh funds to GM Daewoo unless the U.S. parent agrees to its demands.

프리츠 핸더슨 GM 회장이 어제 민유성 산업은행장을 방문, 90분 동안 면담했다. 산은은 GM대우의 주 채권은행이다. GM대우의 대주주인 GM이 산은의 요구에 동의하지 않으면 대출 연장이나 신규 대출을 하지 않겠다고 산은이 경고한 지 일주일 만에 핸더슨 회장이 방문한 것이다.
After the meeting, Henderson told journalists that both men held a constructive conversation and agreed on cooperation for the future of GM’s Korean unit. He plans to make an official statement later today.
면담 후 핸더슨 회장은 기자들에게 양측이 건설적인 대화를 나눴으며 GM대우의 발전계획에 대해 협력하기로 합의했다고 말했다. 핸더슨 회장은 오늘 공식 성명을 발표할 계획이다.
GM Daewoo was hit hard by falling demand and currency investments gone sour due to the global economic downturn, while its massive U.S. parent emerged from bankruptcy in July under a government-backed rescue plan.

GM대우는 세계적 경기불황의 영향으로 수요가 감소하고 외환선물 투자에서 큰 손실을 입으면서 심각한 경영난을 겪고 있다. GM대우의 모기업인 GM은 미국 정부의 구제계획으로 6월에 파산위기에서 빠져나왔다.
GM Daewoo has been seeking a one trillion won ($855 million) loan after using up a $2 billion credit line from creditors. The local unit is also reportedly planning a 491.2 billion won share sale this month to secure working capital.

GM대우는 신용 한도액 20억 달러를 다 쓴 후에 추가로 1조원(8억5천5백만 달러) 정도를 지원해 달라고 요청해왔다. GM대우는 운영 자금을 마련하기 위해 이번 달에 4천9백12억원 규모의 주식을 팔 계획인 것으로 알려졌다.
It’s a public secret in the automotive industry here that GM Daewoo’s problems were aggravated after being hit with foreign currency hedging losses amounting to 2.7 trillion won, though the company itself has not acknowledged that fact. Those contracts were also said to have been the primary cause of the sudden retirement of Michael Grimaldi, president of GM Daewoo.

GM대우의 자금난은 2조7천억 원에 이르는 외환선물거래에서의 손실로 가중됐다는 것은 공공연한 비밀이다. GM대우는 이 사실을 인정하지 않고 있다. GM대우의 마이클 그리말디 사장이 갑작스럽게 사퇴한 주요 이유도 이 외환선물거래 때문인 것으로 알려져 있다.
