Fitch upgrades outlook for Korean economy to ‘stable’

Fitch Ratings has raised its outlook on Korea to the level it held nine months ago, adding weight to the belief that Korea’s economy is showing strong signs of improvement.

국제적인 신용평가사인 피치가 한국의 신용등급 전망을 9개월 이전 수준으로 올려, 한국 경제가 좋아지고 있다는 조짐이 강하게 나타나고 있다는 믿음에 힘을 실어줬다.

기획재정부가 발표한 성명에 따르면, 피치는 한국의 신용등급 전망을 ‘부정적’에서 ‘안정적’으로 상향 조정했고 국가신용등급은 A+를 유지했다.
Fitch, which launched a three-day on-field review of Korea in July, said in its release that it attributed the upgrade to the government’s efforts to overcome the economic crisis and to the improvement in its macroeconomic data and foreign currency liquidity, among other factors.

7월에 3일 동안 한국을 현장 실사한 피치는 보도자료에서 정부의 경제위기 극복 노력, 거시경제 지표 개선, 외환 유동성 등을 신용등급 전망 상향 조정 이유로 들었다.
“South Korea’s sovereign credit fundamentals have regained ground against the ‘A’ peer group, warranting an outlook revision to stable,” said Ai Ling Ngiam, director at Fitch’s Asia Sovereigns, in the statement. Last November, Fitch lowered its outlook on Korea from stable to negative, citing concerns over the deleveraging of the banking system.

피치의 아시아 국가신용등급 담당이사 아이 링 얌은 보도자료에서 “한국의 국가 신용등급 기본이 A그룹의 다른 국가들보다 좋아져서 신용등급 전망을 안정적으로 조정했다.”고 말했다. 지난해 11월 피치는 한국 은행들의 급속한 대출회수에 우려를 표명하여 한국의 신용등급 전망을 ‘안정적’에서 ‘부정적’으로 낮췄었다.
In its report, Fitch said the foreign currency problems that local banks had experienced during the global credit crunch have eased since the second quarter of the year. It added that the quick recovery of exports had also been a factor as Korea’s economy is export-led, raising concerns during the recent global downturn.

피치는 세계적인 신용경색으로 한국의 은행들이 겪었던 외환 유동성 문제는 올해 2사분기 이후로 완화됐다고 보고서에서 밝혔다. 피치는 또 한국이 수출주도형 경제이기 때문에 세계적 경기침체 로 한국경제가 타격을 입을 것으로 우려했으나 수출이 빠르게 회복되고 있는 점도 한 요인이라고 덧붙였다.
According to the ministry, Korea is the only investment-grade country to have its sovereign rating or outlook raised this year by Fitch. The agency downgraded the credit ratings or outlooks on countries it monitors 27 times this year. Last year, five other countries had their outlooks underrated when Korea received a negative outlook on Nov. 10, but none of them has recovered back to a stable outlook so far.

기획재정부에 따르면, 투자적격 등급 국가들 가운데 올해 피치가 신용등급 또는 전망을 상향 조정한 국가는 유일하게 한국뿐이다. 피치는 올 들어 27개 국가의 신용등급 또는 전망을 낮췄다. 지난해 11월10일 한국의 신용등급 전망이 ‘부정적’으로 하향됐을 때 다른 5개 국가의 신용등급 전망도 낮췄었으나, 지금까지 그 국가들 중 누구도 ‘안정적’ 전망으로 회복되지 못했다.
