ⓑ who had been expecting such great things → whose expectations had been raised 여기서 such great things의 의미가 불분명함. “기대가 커졌던 유권자들”로 바꾸어 모호한 목적어를 쓰는 것을 피함.
ⓒ has reappeared → reappeared ‘다시 나타나다’ reappear는 현재완료를 쓰면 의미가 어색한 동사. 지난해에 재등장을 한 것이지, 지난해부터 지금까지 쭉 재등장 했다는 말은 어색함. 나타나는 것은 그 특정 순간에 무언가 나타나는 의미이고 어떤 기간 동안에 나타난다는 의미는 어색함.
ⓓ since → beginning since는 현재 완료에 쓰이는 말이므로, 현재 완료를 과거형으로 바꿨으므로, beginning을 씀.
멋진 말이었으나 늘 뒤끝이 텁텁했던 그린슈트. 이달 초 취임해 시장의 이목을 받는 김중수 한국은행 총재가 지난 16일 그걸 다시 끄집어냈다. “최근 미국에서 그린슈트의 신호가 나오고 있다는 의견이 많아지고 있다.” 속뜻은 세계경제의 싹이 이제야 돋기 시작했으니 ‘저금리’ 온상에서 좀 더 길러야 한다는 뜻은 아닐는지.

He observed that there have been many sightings of green shoots in the U.S. recently. Perhaps he was implying that since the world economy is only ⓒstarting to sprout, it should be kept a little ⓓfurther in the metaphorical greenhouse of low interest rates.

ⓒ starting → beginning start를 쓰나 begin을 쓰나 차이가 없는 경우도 있지만 start는 처음으로 시작하는 경우에 쓰는 경향이 있고 갑작스러운 뉘앙스가 있음. 싹이 돋는 것은 반복되는 것임.
ⓓ further → longer 둘 다 “그 이상, 더” 라는 뜻을 가지고 있으나, further은 ‘정도가 심화되는’을 뜻하고, longer는 ‘시간적으로 더 긴’ 이란 의미를 뜻함.
