Korea won its Group D opening match against Switzerland 4-0 on a hat-trick from Ji So-yun at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Dresden, Germany, on Wednesday night.
The 19-year-old Hanyang Women’s University student became the first female Korean player to notch a hat-trick at a FIFA-sanctioned tournament. Ji hit the post early on in the game but scored the opener in the 34th minute. Lee Hyun-young added another before half time to put Korea up 2-0.
Ji continued her impressive performance in the second half, scoring in the 52nd minute and adding her third free kick at the 64th minute.
Listed at 161 centimeters (5 feet 3 inches), Ji lacks size, but her goal-scoring ability is among the very best. Kim has scored a total of 13 goals in 22 international matches so far in her career. Grouped with Switzerland, Ghana and the United States, Korea plays Ghana on July 17 in Dresden.
Korea is making its second appearance at the event.
The team finished third in its group at the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup six years ago in Thailand. It is coming off a second place finish at last year’s AFC U-19 Women’s Championships in China and is looking to advance out of its group and advance to the quarterfinals of the 16-team tourney.
