Carter leaves Pyongyang with Gomes

테스트

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter left North Korea today with a U.S. citizen he came to rescue, according to the North’s state-controlled Korean Central News Agency.

AIjalon Mahli Gomes, a 31-year-old Boston man, was on the same plane with the 86-year-old Carter that left a Pyongyang airport, the KCNA reported.

Carter flew to the North on Wednesday on a private rescue mission for Gomes, detained for seven months for illegal entry into the reclusive regime through China.

Carter’s mission was initially expected to be finished Thursday, with many predicting his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il before the North releases Gomes, but was delayed by one more day after Kim’s unexpected departure for China was reported. Kim is believed to have left for China early Thursday morning and be still visiting the country, according to Seoul officials. KCNA reported Carter met the North’s No.2 Kim Yong-nam on Wednesday but whether he met Kim Jong-il remains unknown.
