Top defector found dead in his bathtub

Hwang Jang-yop, the highest ranking North Korean official to defect to the South, was found dead yesterday morning in a safe house in Gangnam, Seoul.

남한으로 망명한 북한의 최고위직 인사인 황장엽(87) 전 북한 노동당 비서가 어제 아침 서울 강남의 안가에서 숨진 채 발견됐다.
According to police, the body of the 87-year-old former North Korean was discovered at 9:30 a.m. in a bathtub in a government safe house in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam district, where Hwang had lived for an undisclosed period of time.
경찰에 따르면 황씨는 공개되지 않은 기간 동안 살고 있었던 강남구 논현동 정부 안가 욕조 안에서 오전 9시30분쯤 사망한 채로 발견됐다.
”There is no suspicion that Hwang’s death was a homicide,” said Gangnam Police Precinct head Ahn Byeong-jeong at a media briefing yesterday. “Hwang normally sat in the living room in the mornings, but he was not seen there today, so an agent from his protection team knocked on the door twice, but heard no reply. The agent opened the door with an emergency key and checked the bathroom inside the bedroom and discovered Hwang’s body inside the tub.”

안병정 강남경찰서장은 어제 기자회견에서 “황씨의 사망에는 타살 혐의점이 없다”고 말했다. “황씨는 평소 아침에는 거실에 앉아 있었으나 오늘은 보이지 않았다. 그래서 황씨의 경호팀원이 두 번 문을 두드렸으나 반응이 없었다. 그 경호팀원이 비상열쇠로 문을 열고 침실 내 욕실을 확인하면서 욕조 안에 있는 황씨의 시신을 발견했다.”
After his defection in 1997, Hwang faced numerous assassination threats from Pyongyang. After visiting Washington in March, the threats escalated and his security detail was boosted to a level higher than even a prime minister, police officials said.

1997년 탈북한 이후로 황씨는 평양으로부터 수많은 암살 위협을 받아왔었다. 올해 3월 워싱턴을 방문한 이후 암살 위협이 더욱 강해져서 국무총리보다도 더 높은 수준으로 경호를 강화했다고 경찰이 밝혔다.
The police refused to provide details about the two-story safe house, including how long Hwang resided there. The ground floor was used by the protection team, and Hwang lived on the second floor.

경찰은 황씨가 안가에 살았던 기간과 2층 구조의 안가에 대해 자세한 내용을 공개하지는 않았다. 경호팀이 1층에 거주했고 황씨는 2층에서 살았다.
Forensic experts from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, the Gangnam Police, the National Institute of Scientific Investigation and Seoul National University, as well as a prosecutor from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office conducted a visual postmortem examination, but found no wounds.

서울경찰청, 강남경찰서, 국립과학수사연구소, 서울대, 서울지검 등에서 나온 법의학 전문가들이 외관 검시를 했으나 상처는 없었다.
