Navy storms hijacked ship, rescues

The Korean chemical cargo ship that was hijacked last weekend was rescued at 3 p.m. yesterday Korean time, along with its 21-person crew, after a breathless five-day mission by the Korean military, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said yesterday. Eight pirates were killed and five were captured.

한국군이 펼친 5일간의 숨가쁜 작전 끝에 한국시각으로 어제 오후 3시쯤 선원 21명 전원과 함께 해적들에게 납치됐던 한국선적 화학물질 운반선을 구출하는데 성공했다고 합참이 어제 밝혔다. 해적 8명을 사살하고 5명을 생포했다.
The captain of the ship, Seok Hae-gyun, 58, sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach, and three members of the Navy’s special forces were also wounded in the process. Their injuries are not life-threatening, said the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

선장 석해균(58)씨가 복부에 총상을 입었고 해군 특수부대원 3명이 작전 도중 부상을 당했다. 합참은 부상이 생명을 위협할 정도는 아니라고 말했다.
“The pirates were armed with 100 rifles, machine guns and RPG-7 grenade launchers, so our special operations unit had to launch a surprise attack with tension levels at their peak. The soldiers cleared roughly 50 compartments inside the ship, following their orders given ahead of the attack,” said Lee Seong-ho of the Joint Chiefs of Staff yesterday. “The crew is currently in good condition.” The ship’s captain was immediately sent to a nearby hospital on an American helicopter.

이성호 합참 작전부장은 어제 “해적들이 소총 100여정, 기관총, RPG-7 유탄발사기 등으로 무장하고 있어서 우리 특수부대가 매우 신중하게 기습공격을 감행해야 했다. 특수부대원들은 공격 이전에 내린 명령에 따라 화물선 50여 개 선실의 수색을 마쳤다.”고 말했다. “선원들은 현재 양호한 상태다.” 선장은 곧바로 미군 헬기로 인근 병원으로 후송됐다.
Since 2006, nine Korean vessels have been seized by pirates in the area. This is the first time the military has tried to recapture a ship, and the first military operation in international waters by Korea. The successful rescue carries great meaning for Korean trade, as 30 percent of Korean commerce ships pass through the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea.

2006년 이후 한국 선박 9척이 이 지역에서 해적들에게 납치됐었다. 이번이 납치된 선박을 구출하는 첫 번째 군사작전이었고 한국군의 사상 최초의 공해상 군사작전이었다. 한국 상업 선박의 30퍼센트가 아덴만과 아라비아해를 통과하기 때문에 이번의 성공적인 구출작전은 한국 무역에 있어서는 의미하는 바가 크다.
President Lee Myung-bak was quick to respond to the rescue mission, saying that the military had “perfectly executed the operation, no matter what the situation.” “Anything that threatens the life and safety of our citizens will not be tolerated,” said Lee at the Blue House yesterday.
구출 성공 보고를 받은 이명박 대통령은 어제 곧바로 특별담화로 “우리 군이 어려운 여건하에서도 완벽하게 구출작전을 수행해냈다. 앞으로도 우리 국민의 생명과 안전을 위협하는 어떤 행위도 용납하지 않을 것”이라고 말했다.
