Politicians pour into Gangwon in very hot race

Political celebrities of the ruling and opposition parties both headed to Gangwon yesterday to excite voters with their campaigns for what appears to be the hottest race in next month’s by-elections.

Four positions are up for grabs in the April 27 by-elections and the Gangwon gubernatorial race has started to heat up as the Grand National and Democratic parties both recruited former Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation presidents as possible candidates. In addition to the race for governor, representatives for Bundang in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, Gimhae in South Gyeongsang and Suncheon in South Jeolla are to be elected.

The Grand National Party yesterday hosted a grand ceremony in Chuncheon, Gangwon to launch a special committee inside the ruling party to support Pyeongchang’s bid for the Winter Olympics in 2018. About 1,500 Grand National Party members, including party Chairman Ahn Sang-soo, attended the event. Ohm Ki-young, former MBC president who had declared his bid to become GNP candidate in the Gangwon election, also joined the ceremony.

Among many dignitaries was GNP former Chairwoman Park Geun-hye, nicknamed the Queen of Elections. Park’s endorsement in a campaign had been an important factor in the past. She attended the ceremony as an adviser for the special committee and gave an address.

The Democratic Party leadership also began a two-day trip to Gangwon. Choi Moon-soon, Ohm’s presidential predecessor at MBC, had declared his ambition to fight for the governor position.

DP Chairman Sohn Hak-kyu revisited Gangwon again yesterday, only five days after his last visit. It was also his fourth time visiting the province within a month.

Lee Kwang-jae of the Democratic Party was elected as Gangwon governor last June but a Supreme Court conviction in January effectively kicked him out of the post.

Since then Sohn has paid special attention to the by-election in the province, vowing to take “unlimited responsibility” for the outcome.

Meanwhile, Kim Tae-ho, a former prime minister candidate and former South Gyeongsang governor, announced his bid to become the new representative of Gimhae under the Grand National Party banner during a press conference yesterday.

“I will give my every experience and talent for Gimhae’s development. Please give me another chance,” Kim said.

Kim said he had spent the last six months seriously reflecting and realized his shortcomings. “I was at the center of the spotlight as a young prime minister candidate but came back without even a start. Many were disappointed with me, particularly the South Gyeongsang residents,” he said. “If I am given another chance, I will not let you down.”

Last August Kim gave up his prime minister nomination after opposition politicians hurled corruption allegations at him during confirmation hearings. After the embarrassing debacle, Kim left for China but returned to Korea recently for his political comeback through the by-elections.

김태호 귀국 계기 여야 재보선 열기 '후끈'

후보 선출 둘러싼 정당별 내부 경쟁도 치열

4.27 재보선을 50여일 앞두고 정치권에 선거 열기가 본격적으로 달아오르고 있다.

특히 한나라당 김해을 후보로 거론되는 김태호 전 경남지사가 지난 5일 중국에서 귀국하면서 각 당별로 후보 선출을 둘러싼 경쟁은 더욱 치열하게 진행될 전망이다.

지난해 10월 국무총리 후보 인사청문회 과정에서 낙마한 뒤 중국으로 유학을 떠났던 김 전 지사는 귀국 일성으로 "일을 하고 싶어 미치겠다"고 말해 강력한 출마의지를 드러낸 것 아니냐는 해석을 낳았다.

그러나 상황은 녹록지 않다는 게 당내 중론이다. 두 번 연속 민주당 의원이 당선될 정도로 야세(野勢)가 강한 곳인데다, '박연차 게이트' 연루 의혹 등도 부담스런 대목이다.

민주당은 곽진업 전 국세청 차장, 경남지방경찰청장 출신의 박영진 변호사, 김윤현 온누리청소년수련원 원장 등 3명을 대상으로 13∼14일 여론조사 방식의 국민참여경선(당원50%+일반국민50%)을 실시해 후보를 확정하고 이후 국민참여당 이봉수 후보와의 단일화를 추진할 계획이다.

강원지사 선거는 가장 경쟁이 치열하다. 엄기영(한나라당)-최문순(민주당) 두 전직 MBC 사장간 경쟁구도가 펼쳐질지가 가장 관심사다.

두 사람은 "말을 잘하지만, 좀 쉽게 한다는 생각이 든다"(엄기영), "이 둘(한나라당과 엄기영)의 만남은 야합과 기회주의의 전형"(최문순)이라며 상대방을 겨냥하는 등 이미 신경전을 펼치고 있다.

한나라당에서는 최흥집 전 강원도 정무부지사와 이호영 전 이명박대통령 예비후보 특보도 지역을 누비며 경선을 대비하고 있다. 강원지사 후보는 국민경선을 통해 선출된다. 3만4천여명 규모의 선거인단이 참여하고 전화여론조사를 포함하면 4만2천여명에 달한다.

민주당은 최 의원과 조일현 이화영 유재규 전 의원 등 4명이 경선참여를 신청했다. 추후 김대유 전 청와대 경제수석, 이근식 강원도 경제부지사 등의 참여 가능성도 거론된다.

분당을 보궐선거의 경우, 한나라당은 '인물이 너무 많아서', 민주당은 '사람이 너무 없어서' 걱정하는 대조적인 상황이다.

한나라당의 경우, '오리무중'(핵심당직자)이라는 표현 그대로다. 정운찬 전 국무총리의 출마 여부는 내년 대선까지 생각하는 여권 핵심부의 복안과 당내 제세력간 힘겨루기 등이 복합적으로 작용하면서 풀기 어려운 고차방정식이 됐다.

강재섭 전 대표와 박계동 전 의원은 지역 챙기기의 강도를 더 높여가고 있다. 조윤선, 정옥임 의원 등 비례대표 여성 의원들의 이름도 오르내린다.

민주당은 손학규 대표가 여러 인사들을 계속 접촉 중이지만 뾰족한 수가 없다. 이에 따라 당내에서는 손 대표가 나서야 한다는 목소리가 여전히 수그러들지 않고 있다.

전남 순천은 민주당의 무공천 결정으로 비(非) 민주당 출신의 야권 단일후보와 민주당 출신의 무소속 후보가 대결을 벌일 것으로 보인다.
