Japan texts claim Dokdo

The Japanese government yesterday approved new textbooks for middle school students that strengthened the wording of its sovereignty claim over Dokdo, angering Seoul and throwing a spanner into relations that had warmed considerably since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami with Korea’s sympathy and aid to the stricken nation.

일본 정부가 어제 독도 영유권 주장을 강화한 중등 교과서들을 검정 통과시켜 한국을 화나게 했다. 이로써 한국인들이 3월11일 대지진과 해일로 피해를 입은 일본을 돕겠다고 나서면서 모처럼 상당히 좋아진 한일관계가 다시 냉각될 것으로 보인다.
Seoul yesterday summoned the top Japanese envoy to protest the new textbooks. The largest Japanese textbook publisher joined smaller companies to include more assertive claims over Dokdo in the new school texts.

Yesterday, Japan’s education ministry said it has adopted 18 textbooks - geography books from four publishers, history books from seven and civic textbooks from another seven - for use at public middle schools. Some claim Dokdo, which the Japanese call Takeshima, in a more obvious way than in previous teaching materials.

어제 일본 문부성은 공립 중학교에서 사용할 지리 4종, 역사 7종, 공민 7종 등 교과서 18종을 검정에서 통과시켰다. 일부 교과서들은 과거 교과서보다 훨씬 노골적인 방법으로 독도(일본에선 다케시마) 영유권을 기술했다.
Tokyo Shoseki, which publishes 50 percent of Japan’s middle school social studies textbooks, featured Dokdo in maps in its previous geography book, but the new geography book edition also describes it in the book’s text.

일본 전체 중학생용 사회과목 교과서의 절반 가량을 출판하는 도쿄서적은 예전 지리교과서에는 지도에 독도를 표시했으나, 새 지리교과서에는 문장으로 기술했다.
“Takeshima is Japan’s territory,” reads a new Tokyo Shoseki textbook, according to Seoul’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. “Korea is illegally occupying the island, so we are continuously protesting to the Korean government about it.”

한국의 외교통상부에 따르면 도쿄서적의 새 교과서에 “다케시마는 일본 영토이다. 한국이 그 섬을 불법적으로 점거하고 있어 우리는 한국 정부에 이 점에 대해 계속 항의하고 있다.”고 기술했다.
