14th WORLD KOREAN LANGUAGE SPEECH CONTEST

Friday: The Institute of International Education at Kyung Hee University hosts the 14th World Korean Language Speech Contest for foreigners. The 20 contestants who passed the preliminary round of competition will compete on Friday for prize money and a certificate. The topics for this year’s contest are: “My favorite Korean food” and “Personal experience with Korean culture.”

HOUSE OF SHARING - TOUR

Sunday: The House of Sharing’s International Outreach Team is offering a tour of the home of eight former “comfort women” and the adjacent Museum of Sexual Slavery by the Japanese Military.

So-called “comfort women” are survivors of sexual slavery by the Japanese military during the Asia-Pacific War (1932-1945).

The tour will leave at 10 a.m. from Gangbyeon Station, line No. 2, exit 1. The group will take a bus to Gwangju and a 10-minute taxi ride to the House of Sharing. The visit costs 13,000 won ($12.02), which includes the entrance fee, bus and taxi fares. Participants should bring a packed lunch as there’s no place to purchase food. ASIA SOCIETY - ANNIVERSARY AND FASHION SHOW

May 18: The Asia Society’s Korea Center celebrates its third anniversary with a fashion show featuring the designs of Lee Young-hee, a leader in hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) design.
