From busking to stardom, Kim chases his dream

Kim, who was among the final six contestants on the show eight months ago, won over a steady fan base for his unique vocals.
Although the 21-year-old did not win the show, his life was changed forever.
“The most dramatically changed aspect of my life are my looks,” said Kim.
“I lost 17 kilograms to prepare for the show and finally decided to take as much care of my appearance as I did of my singing.”
Kim managed to sign a contract with the influential Shofar Music, an entertainment agency that has signed many well-known singer-songwriters, such as Yojo and Epitone Project.
Kim’s journey to the top was no walk in the park.
Before auditioning for the reality television show, Kim led a lonely life. His parents separated early in his childhood and he struggled financially for most of his life.
Kim’s passion for music turned his life around by helping him remain immune to the economic hardships that life constantly threw his way.
Possessing not much more than raw talent, a guitar and unlimited determination, Kim frequently ventured out to the streets to perform for anyone willing to listen.
“Whenever I heard myself sing from the bottom of my heart, I could forget about all my worries,” said Kim. “I also loved how people on the streets enjoyed my music.”
Kim’s early experiences performing on the streets and warm reception from passers-by propelled him to audition for “Superstar K.”
Today, Kim’s online fan community consists of more than 10,000 people.
Kim released six songs on his debut album. They are full of his signature folk rhythms and are sure to speak to those who were taken by his singing style eight months ago.
Some of the songs included on the album were written by Kim himself, who hopes to make this his full-time job in the near future.
“I am both nervous and excited for my first album,” said the novice singer.
“But I will continue to make efforts to become a professional singer-songwriter one day and create music that can be remembered by many for decades.”

가진 것 없던 거리 뮤지션
“이번엔 음반으로 대박 칠래요”
당신은 이 남자를 어느 거리에서 마주쳤을 수 있다. 그곳은 불 꺼진 공원일 수도, 적막한 버스 터미널일 수도 있다. 기타 하나 달랑 메고 거리에서 홀로 노래하던 이 남자, 당신은 혹 본 적이 있으신지.
물론 당신은 이 남자를 알고 있을 게다. ‘거리 뮤지션’이었던 그를 모른다 해도 상관 없다. 오디션 프로그램 ‘슈퍼스타 K2’에서 독특한 음색을 선보였던 이 남자, 김지수(21)를 당신은 분명 본 적이 있을 게다.
김지수가 17일 데뷔 앨범을 발표했다. 지난해 방영된 ‘슈퍼스타 K2’에서 톱6에 오른 지 8개월 만이다. 그 8개월 새 그의 인생은 완전히 뒤집혔다. 거리에서 노래하던 무명 뮤지션에서 ‘예비 스타’로 성장했다.
“가장 많이 바뀐 건 제 외모에요. 오디션 방송이 끝난 뒤 17㎏을 뺐어요. 사람들이 저를 알아보고 또 TV 출연도 해야 되니까 외모 관리는 필수죠. 예전엔 참 제가 봐도 한심한 겉모습이었는데…. 으하하하.”
그는 가진 게 없는 청춘이었다. 괜한 말이 아니라, 진짜 그랬다. 어릴 적 부모님이 갈라섰고, 그 때문에 가난하고 외로운 청소년기를 보냈다. 그런 그가 올곧게 자랄 수 있었던 건 “순전히 음악 덕분”이다. 그는 아르바이트를 하다가도 일이 끝나면 곧장 기타를 둘러메고 거리 무대에 섰다. “내 안에서 나오는 노래 소리가 나를 위로했고, 내 노래를 사람들이 좋아해주는 모습도 너무 좋았기 때문”이란다.
그래서 도전한 ‘슈퍼스타 K2’. 그의 등장은 프로그램 전체의 음악적 수준을 끌어올렸을 정도로 신선했다. 거리에서 줄곧 음악을 익혔던 그는 수준 높은 기타 솜씨와 독특한 음색으로 심사위원과 대중을 압도했다. 비록 톱6에서 질주는 멈추었지만, 가수로서의 그의 성장 가능성을 의심하는 이들은 드물었다.
그 첫 결과물이 이번 데뷔 앨범이다. 모두 6곡이 수록된 자그마한 앨범엔 김지수 특유의 포크 리듬이 인상적인 곡들이 소담스레 담겼다. 싱어 송라이터 지망생답게 자작곡도 포함됐다. ‘금방 사랑에 빠지다’라는 상큼한 노래다. 그는 “가수로 데뷔하면서 만나는 사람들이 모두 사랑스럽게 여겨져 그 얘기를 노래로 풀어냈다”고 했다.
갓 데뷔 앨범을 냈지만, 이미 1만여 명이 가입된 팬클럽이 있을 정도로 인기가 두텁다. 하지만 그도 안다. 지금까지는 ‘슈퍼스타 K2’의 짙은 후광에 떠밀려 왔다는 것을. 그래서 “앨범을 내고 나니 두려움 반 설렘 반”이라고 말한다. “싱어 송라이터로 꾸준히 성장해 수십 년이 지나도 사람들에게 기억될 명품 노래를 부르는 게 꿈”이라고 했다.
