Bruins eye Cup on way to Vancouver

BOSTON - Some 1,000 Boston Bruins fans gave their hockey team a noisy send-off Monday as the team left the TD Arena after a warm-up to head to Vancouver, Canada, for Wednesday’s Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Canucks.

Bruins goalie Tim Thomas, brilliant in the net during Boston’s seven-game triumph over the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference finals, acknowledged the thrill of playing for the Stanley Cup.

“It’s great and it’s where you’ve want to be,” he told reporters. “What I’ve worked for my whole life, to get to this point in the Stanley Cup. And so it’s a big accomplishment.

“But you don’t dream of getting to the Stanley Cup Finals, you dream of winning the Stanley Cup. So there’s still more work to be done.”

Bruins coach Claude Julien said the team was done celebrating its 1-0 victory Friday in the Eastern decider and was ready to aim at ending the franchise’s 39-year Stanley Cup drought.

“It’s sunk in. I mean it sunk in that we’re there,” Julien said. “It also sunk in that we’re not done. “We realize there’s a lot of work ahead of us, probably the hardest games to win ... against a team that kind of dominated the league this year. And we know we’re capable of doing it.”

The Canucks led the National Hockey League with 117 points this season, with the Bruins amassing 103.

Julien said he took care to ease his players back onto the ice after their arduous conference finals.

“I think one of the things was giving our guys some rest and that’s why yesterday not everybody went on the ice,” he said. “Guys that have played a lot, they could benefit from two days of nonskating. The Boston coach said he hoped these upcoming games would give him the opportunity to lay hands on the cup.

“I’ve seen it in the Hall of Fame in Toronto. I have stayed away from it,” he said. “All I said is the day that I even get a picture or touch it will be the day that I’ve earned it.”

북미아이스하키리그(NHL) 스탠리컵의 주인공을 놓고 격돌하는 두 팀의 한(恨)이 서린 시간이다. 스탠리컵은 NHL의 시즌 챔피언이 받는 우승컵이다. 이번 시즌 스탠리컵 결승(7전4선승제)은 2일(한국시간) 밴쿠버의 로저스 아레나에서 시작한다. 올해 챔피언 자리를 두고 동부 콘퍼런스 우승팀 보스턴 브루인스와 서부 우승팀 밴쿠버 캐넉스가 맞붙는다.

두 팀은 스탠리컵을 품기 위해 40여 년을 기다려왔다. 밴쿠버는 1970년부터 NHL에 참가했지만 지난해까지 40년 동안 스탠리컵을 차지한 적이 없다. 최근 스탠리컵 결승에 오른 93~94 시즌에는 뉴욕 레인저스와 7차전까지 접전을 펼쳤지만 3-4로 무릎을 꿇었다. 보스턴은 26년부터 NHL에 참가해 왔으며 우승 5회, 준우승 12회를 차지했다. 그러나 72년 우승 후 38년간 우승을 맛보지 못했다.

분위기는 밴쿠버 쪽이 더 좋다. 올 시즌 밴쿠버는 30개 팀 중 최다 승점(117점)을 올리며 최강 전력을 과시했다. 서부 콘퍼런스 톱시드로 플레이오프에 나서 콘퍼런스 결승에서 새너제이 샤크스를 4승1패로 꺾고 일찌감치 스탠리컵 결승에 올랐다.

밴쿠버에는 데뷔 이후 최고의 활약을 펼치고 있는 스웨덴 출신의 쌍둥이 형제 다니엘·헨릭 세딘이 있다. 두 형제는 플레이오프에서만 37개의 공격포인트(10골·27도움)를 합작해냈다. 여기에 캐나다 국가대표 골리 로베르토 루옹고가 버티고 있다. 루옹고는 2차 연장전까지 치러졌던 콘퍼런스 결승에서 새너제이의 슈팅 56개 가운데 54개를 막아냈다.

밴쿠버가 파죽지세의 분위기를 타고 있다면 보스턴은 ‘경험’이 있다. 5회(29·39·41·70·72년) 우승한 경력이 있는 보스턴은 미국 팀 중 디트로이트 레드윙스(11회) 다음으로 스탠리컵을 가장 많이 차지했다. 아이스하키 종주국 캐나다에 당당히 맞서는 팀이다. 보스턴은 플레이오프에서 10골·7도움을 기록한 다비드 크레이치와 8골·9도움을 올린 네이선 호턴이 팀의 중심이다.
