Yonhap TV joining with Al Jazeera on news content

Yonhap News TV, an all-news cable channel to be launched later this year, signed an agreement with Al Jazeera Satellite Network on Thursday for exchanges of video news content.

Signed between Park Jung-chan, president and CEO of Yonhap News TV, and Wadah Khanfar, director general of Al Jazeera Satellite Network, the Reciprocal News Access Agreement allows the two companies to use each other’s news content on television. Content that has been broadcast will also be made available on Web sites and wireless applications.

The two parties also agreed to give favorable consideration to requests for access to recorded and unbroadcasted material and to provide support in establishing and running their representative bureaus in Seoul and Doha. They also agreed to extend equal assistance to each other’s correspondents as well as special and visiting reporters.

“Al Jazeera is a necessity. It provides a balanced flow of news,” Park said after signing the agreement.

Park invited executives of Al Jazeera to attend a launching ceremony of Yonhap News TV.

Khanfar also said, “Al Jazeera hopes to open a Seoul bureau very soon,” while Al Anstey, managing director of Al Jazeera English, said, “We appreciate the partnership.”

Yonhap News TV is the first Korean media firm to sign such an agreement with Al Jazeera, the leading news channel in the Arab world.

Al Jazeera has more than 65 bureaus and 3,000 staff members worldwide and broadcasts news and current affairs 24 hours a day from its Doha headquarters and from centers in Kuala Lumpur, London and Washington.

연합뉴스TV-알자지라, 영상교류 협약

‘중동 뉴스 강자’ 알자지라와 국내 최초 협약

오는 10월 출범 예정인 연합뉴스TV가 9일 국내 언론사로는 처음으로 아랍권 최대 위성 보도채널인 알-자지라와 영상교류 협약을 체결했다.

박정찬 연합뉴스TV 사장과 와다 칸파르 알-자지라 총사장은 이날 카타르 도하 알-자지라 본사에서 상호 영상교류 협약서에 서명했다.

박 사장은 "이슬람권의 대표 방송인 알-자지라를 영상 교류 협약의 첫 해외 방송 파트너로 삼은 것은 연합뉴스TV가 세계를 지향하는 보도채널이라는 상징적 의미를 갖는 것"이라며 "이번 협약 체결로 한국의 시청자들이 중동권 뉴스에 보다 쉽게 다가갈 수 있게 됐다"고 말했다.

연합뉴스TV는 중동ㆍ북아프리카 지역에서 독보적인 취재 역량을 보유하고 있는 알-자지라와 영상교류 협약을 체결함으로써 중동 관련 뉴스를 더욱 생생하게 전달할 수 있게 됐다.

양사는 협약 체결에 따라 영상 뉴스를 상호 교환, 양사의 TV 채널과 웹사이트, 모바일을 통해 배포할 수 있게 된다.

아울러 양사가 상대방 국가에 지국을 개설할 때 상호 지원하며 양사 특파원들의 취재 활동도 돕기로 합의했다.

연합뉴스TV는 또 최대 주주이자 국가기간뉴스통신사인 연합뉴스의 중동ㆍ아프리카 지역 특파원망을 최대한 활용, 신속하고 심도 있는 중동 뉴스를 제작한다는 방침이다. 연합뉴스는 현재 중동ㆍ아프리카 지역에 국내 최다인 5명의 특파원을 두고 있다.

연합뉴스TV는 국내 최대규모인 550여명에 이르는 취재인력과 전 세계 46개 지역 62명의 해외 특파원망을 보유하고 있는 연합뉴스와 연계, 아시아 대표 뉴스허브, 한 걸음 더 나아가 글로벌 뉴스채널로 도약할 계획이다.

알-자지라는 세계 60개국에 400명의 특파원을 파견하는 등 모두 3천명의 직원을 두고 있으며, 아랍권은 물론 미주와 유럽까지, 총 100개국 2억2천만 가구를 가시청권에 놓고 있다.

알-자지라는 중동권에서 한국에 대한 관심이 갈수록 높아짐에 따라 연내 서울지국을 개설할 예정이다.

칸파르 알-자지라 총사장은 "이번 협약 체결로 양사의 경쟁력이 더욱 강화될 것으로 기대한다"며 "알-자지라가 전문성과 독립성을 바탕으로 세계 주요 뉴스채널로 성장한 것처럼 새로 출범하는 연합뉴스TV도 아시아권의 대표 보도채널로 도약하길 바란다"고 말했다.
