Designer’s ‘Half Chair’ is no half-baked idea

Woojin Chung’s ergonomic “Half Chair” - featuring a seat just half the size of that found on the typical chair - was awarded the “Gold Leaf” at the 2011 International Furniture Design Competition in Asahikawa, Japan.
The designer, 35, is the first Korean to receive the top award at the prestigious competition, which is held every three years in Hokkaido and has debuted a number of hot furniture designers.
Made of ash wood, the Half Chair was one of this year’s 900 furniture pieces from 37 countries that were submitted into the competition.
Six world-renowned designers, including Naoto Fukasawa and Motomi Kawakami, determined that Chung’s chair was an excellent example of where chair design is headed.
Yoon Yeo-hang, a professor at Hongik University who has served as a judge for three consecutive competitions, said Chung’s Half Chair takes up less space compared to most chairs. Yoon also praised the chair’s simple and neat design.
“Asahikawa’s prize-winning works usually get commercialized, and I believe Chung’s product will be mass produced very soon by some Japanese enterprises,” Yoon said.
Now doing a master’s program in furniture design at Aalto University in Finland, Chung also won a cash prize of 3 million yen (around $37,400) from the competition.
Chung earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Chung-Ang University in 2000. He also majored industrial design at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
“I have always been interested in ergonomics,” Chung said in a recent phone interview. “Ergonomic chairs are usually expensive because they require new materials to be designed.”
But Chung said he came up with the idea to remove half of the chair’s seat.
“It would be much cheaper but still ergonomically rational, which will prevent people from detrimental sitting posture,” Chung said. “The Half Chair will make people sit up straight.”
Chung said he was inspired by cellists’ posture when they perform.
“After going through several practices and tests, it took me about one and a half years to finish this product,” he said.
Noteworthy is the Half Chair’s lack of ornamentation, aside from a small drawer right below the seat, showing that good design is not always about adding but often about subtracting.

세계적 가구디자이너 등용문 ‘아사히카와 공모전’ 최고상
엉덩이를 걸치는 좌판(坐板)의 크기는 보통 의자의 반쪽에 불과했다. 하지만 디자인 전문가들을 움직인 감동의 크기는 두 배였다. 세계적 디자이너 나오토 후카사와, 모토미 가와카미 등 심사위원 6명은 “의자 디자인이 추구해야 할 방향을 탁월하게 보여 줬다”고 평가했다.
디자이너 정우진(35·핀란드 알토대 가구디자인학과 석사과정·사진)씨가 2011 아사히카와(旭川) 국제가구 공모전(IFDA)에서 물푸레나무로 만든 ‘반쪽 의자(Half Chair)’로 최고상인 ‘금잎상(Gold Leaf)’을 받았다. 상금 300만 엔(약 4000만원). 그간 한국 디자이너가 심사위원 특별상을 받거나 입선한 적은 있으나 최고상 은 처음이다.
정씨는 2000년 중앙대 건축학과를 졸업했다. 스웨덴 예테보리대에서 산업디자인을 전공하고, 핀란드에서 가구디자인을 공부해 왔다. 그는 본지와 전화 인터뷰에서 “평소 인체공학에 관심이 많았다. 흔히 인체공학을 앞세우는 사무용 의자는 신소재를 쓰고 가격도 비싸다. 그러나 앞쪽 절반을 잘라내는 것만으로 척추에 무리 주는 자세를 막을 수 있겠다고 생각했다”고 말했다. 반쪽 좌판이 되레 사람들의 등을 꼿꼿이 세우게 해준다는 것이다.
“첼로 연주자들이 의자 바깥에 걸터앉아 연주하는 모습에서 아이디어를 얻었어요. 시제품을 만들고 테스트하며 조금씩 발전시키다 보니 완성에 1년 반이 걸렸습니다.”
반쪽 의자에는 별 장식이 없다. 눈에 띌 듯 말 듯 좌판 밑에 설치한 서랍이 전부다. 군더더기 없는 디자인이 높은 평가를 받았다. ‘디자인은 더하기가 아니라 빼기’인 셈이다.
3회 연속 심사위원으로 참여한 윤여항(홍익대 목조형가구학과) 교수는 “ 일반 의자보다 공간도 덜 차지하고, 깔끔한 디자인으로 주목을 받았다. 최고상 선정에 이견이 없었다”고 전했다. 그는 또 “아사히카와 수상작은 실제 상품으로 출시되는 경우가 많다”며 “정씨의 작품도 일본 기업에서 대량생산할 것으로 안다”고 말했다.
