Chile opens Copa America campaign with win

SAN JUAN, Argentina - Chile came from a goal down to beat an under-strength Mexico 2-1 at the Copa America on Monday, while World Cup semifinalists Uruguay also had to fight back to earn a 1-1 draw with Peru.

Uruguay’s draw means all three seeded sides at the tournament have failed to win their opening matches. Hosts Argentina were held 1-1 by Bolivia, while Brazil’s opener against Venezuela ended 0-0.

All 12 teams in the competition have now played one game, with four of the six matches ending in draws. Colombia and Chile are the only sides to have won, both by a single goal.

“Parity is a distinctive trait of modern football,” Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said after his side’s match, summing up the cagey opening games of the tournament.

“Before this competition there were those talking about favorites as if the games had been won before they’d even been played. We don’t believe in that.”

Uruguay, with Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez in attack, had been expected to beat a Peru side that finished at the bottom of the South American qualifying group for the 2010 World Cup. However, it was the Peruvians who took the lead in the 24th minute of the Group C clash against the run of play.

Midfielder Michael Guevara hoofed a speculative pass through the heart of the Uruguayan defense and the two center backs stood like statues, waiting for offside.

But the flag stayed down, leaving Peru’s lone striker Paolo Guerrero to round the goalkeeper and stroke the ball home.

Uruguay kept plugging away and in first-half injury time, its perseverance paid off.

Nicolas Lodeiro squeezed the ball through to Suarez and the Liverpool striker buried his shot in the bottom left-hand corner of the net with virtually the last kick of the half.

Hours later in the same stadium, Chile also fell behind against the run of play, with Mexico’s Nestor Araujo looping a header over goalkeeper Claudio Bravo just before halftime.

But the Chileans equalized in the 67th minute through second half substitute Esteban Paredes, who stole in at the back post to thrash the ball into the net from close range following a scramble in the box.

Six minutes later, Arturo Vidal grabbed Chile’s winner with a towering header from a corner, which rocketed into the top corner of the Mexican net.

The victory sparked wild celebrations in the stadium from around 15,000 Chileans, who made the short trip across the Andes in freezing conditions to follow their team.

Mexico has been forced to field a sub-strength team at the tournament after eight of their players were suspended for disciplinary reasons on their way to Argentina.

칠레, 멕시코에 2-1 승리...C조 1위
칠레(FIFA 랭킹 27위)가 멕시코(9위)를 꺽고 C조 1위로 올라섰다.

칠레는 5일(이하 한국시간) 아르헨티나 산 후안서 열린 멕시코와 `2011 코파 아메리카` C조 1차전에서 에스테반 파데레스와 아르투로 비달의 연속골에 힘입어 2-1 역전승을 거뒀다.

이로써 칠레는 지난해 10월 아랍에미리트연합과 친선전 이후 9경기 연속 무패(6승 3무)를 이어가게 됐다. 반면 멕시코는 지난해 9월 콜롬비아전 승리 이후 이어오던 13경기 연속 무패(10승 3무) 및 7연승 행진을 중단하게 됐다.

세계 랭킹에서는 멕시코가 앞섰지만 경기 전 대부분의 예상은 칠레의 승리로 기울었다. 초청팀 자격으로 코파 아메리카에 출전한 멕시코가 2012 런던 올림픽을 대비하기 위해 22세 이하 선수들로 팀을 구성했기 때문이다. 멕시코는 이번 대회에 하비에르 에르난데스 등 북중미 골드컵 우승 멤버들 대부분이 불참했다.

전력에서 앞서는 칠레는 당연하다는 듯이 경기 초반을 주도했다. 조직적인 패스 플레이와 날카로운 돌파로 멕시코의 혼을 빼앗아 놓았다. 수비진의 조직력이 정비되지 않은 멕시코로서는 수비라인을 밑으로 내려 상대하는 수밖에 없었다.

멕시코는 상대의 공격을 차단하고 빠른 역습으로 나설 수밖에 없었다. 칠레의 공격을 잘 견디뎐 멕시코는 전반 41분 네스토르 알레한도르 아라우호가 한 방을 터트렸다. 아라우호는 상대 골키퍼가 문전을 비운 잠시를 놓치지 않고, 공을 헤딩으로 연결해 선제골을 기록했다. 전반전 유일한 유효슈팅이었다.

선제골을 넣은 멕시코는 전반전보다 더 수비적으로 나섰다. 선수비 후역습의 모습은 여전했다. 그렇지만 전반전과 같이 칠레의 공격을 막는 데는 실패했다. 기죽지 않은 칠레의 공격에 멕시코가 동점골을 내준 것. 후반 22분 코너킥 상황에서 골키퍼을 맞고 나온 것을 파레데스가 침착하게 밀어 넣었다.

기세를 잡은 칠레는 6분 뒤 역전골을 터트렸다. 이번 주인공은 비달이었다. 비달은 코너킥 상황서 자신에게 온 공을 헤딩 슈팅으로 연결, 멕시코의 골망을 흔들었다.

한 골을 리드한 칠레는 남은 시간 동안 더욱 더 멕시코의 골문을 노려봤지만 추가골에는 실패했다. 오히려 경기 종료 직전 멕시코에 결정적인 기회를 내줬지만, 골키퍼의 선방으로 위기를 모면했다.
