International forum for overseas students starts

Students of Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul launched an international forum yesterday to introduce Korean history, pop culture and technology to students from overseas. The forum, called Han-on, which is a pure Korean word meaning “hello,” was organized by 24 students who did all of the fund-raising and publicity for the event on their own. The event continues until Thursday at the university in Jongno district, central Seoul.

The idea for the forum came about when Bae Jang-hwan, 26, the chairman of the Han-on 2011 organizing committee, was talking about Dokdo with his classmates, particularly about what they see as misinformation about the islets in the media. Together, they decided to organize an event to introduce Korea.

Both Korea and Japan claim sovereignty over the East Sea islets, which Japan calls Takeshima, which has continued to raise tensions between the two countries.

In organizing the forum, the students’ first task was securing financial support.

“All we had was an idea; we didn’t even know when the event would be held,” Bae said. “But we didn’t give up and kept knocking on the doors of corporations and our school administration. Eventually, the school promised to provide us with auditorium space.

“That helped us draw esteemed guest speakers such as Mo Chul-min, the vice minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.”

The next challenge was publicizing the event to students overseas.

“Our goal was to invite students outside the country who are interested in Korea,” Bae said “So even though we didn’t have money for the trip, we decided to travel to places such as Singapore and Thailand, where students had expressed interest in the forum.”

To raise money for the trip, the students worked part-time jobs tutoring or working in convenience stores. Once they had reached their goal, they gave presentations at universities overseas. Through these efforts, they were able to attract 100 foreign students from 21 countries including China, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. Also attending the forum are 20 foreign students living in Korea.

An Indonesian student who introduced herself as Nana attended the forum with nine of her friends in tow.

“Although I had to travel from abroad, I thought this would be a great opportunity to discover more about a country I am interested in,” Nana said “And I can’t wait to learn more about Korean pop culture trends.”

한국 배우러 성균관대 찾은 외국 대학생들

학생 포럼 21개국 참가…'한류 세계적 인기 비결 알고파'

"가사 내용은 몰라도 한국 음악을 들으면 노래가 전하려는 느낌이 마음 속으로 그대로 들어오는 것 같아요. 듣기도 편하고요."

인도네시아 국립대(University of Indonesia)에서 중어중문학을 전공하는 이블린 이스나이니(22.여)씨는 8월 1일부터 성균관대 캠퍼스에서 '한국의 매력'을 배우고 있다.

그는 성균관대 학생 단체 '한온'이 1~4일 개최하는 외국인 대학생 초청 행사 '2011 한온 국제포럼'에 참가하기 위해 최근 한국을 찾았다.

포럼 첫 행사인 스티브 김 꿈ㆍ희망ㆍ미래재단 이사장의 강연에서 만난 이스나이니씨는 "중국사를 공부하는 과정에서 중국과 밀접한 관련성을 갖고 있는 한국 문화와 역사에도 관심을 갖게 됐다"고 참가 동기를 밝혔다.

좋아하는 한국 가수로 그룹 '빅뱅'을 꼽은 그는 "한국인들이 자신들의 문화를 영화나 드라마에 녹여내는 방식이 마음에 든다"며 "한국 드라마나 영화 중에서는 '풀하우스'와 '내 이름은 김삼순'을 인상적으로 봤다"고 말했다.

이번 포럼은 외국 학생들에게 한국의 문화와 정보통신기술, 경제, 한류 등에 대해 알리고 토론하는 자리로 24명 남짓한 한온 회원들이 10개월간 자력으로 준비했다.

인맥을 총동원해 외국인 학생들에게 행사 소개 이메일을 보내고 싱가포르ㆍ태국에서도 현지 홍보를 한 결과 21개국 110여명의 외국인 학생들이 참가 의사를 밝혔고, 한국인 학생도 120여명이 참가한다.

한국개발연구원(KDI) 국제정책대학원에서 유학 중인 인도네시아인 리타 라미야티(32.여)씨는 "10년 전까지만 해도 한류가 이렇게 전세계적으로 유명해질 줄 아무도 몰랐지만 지금은 모두가 한류를 안다"며 "한류가 어떻게 인기를 얻게 됐는지 알고 싶어서 참가했다"고 말했다.

한국 사극을 좋아한다는 그는 "한국과 한국 문화에 대한 이해도를 높이는 것이 목표"라며 "특히 내일(2일) 진행될 한류 관련 주제 발표에 관심이 많다"고 전했다.

이날 오후에는 심상숙 한국 예절교육협회 상임부이사장의 지도로 참가 학생들이 함께 한국 전통 다도를 배우는 시간이 마련되기도 했다.

2일에는 강철근 서울예대 교수, 강인규 펜실베니아주립대 교수, 이정윤 한국음반출판사협회 사무국장 등이 한국 문화산업과 한류의 동향, 쟁점 등에 대해 발표하는 세션이 본격 진행된다.

김봉곤 청학동예절학교 훈장 등 국내 명사들의 강연과 한국의 경제경영ㆍ정보통신기술ㆍ남북한 및 동아시아 등을 주제로 한 전문가 발표도 이어진다.

라미야티씨는 "영어 원어 강연 비중을 더 늘렸으면 하지만 대학생들이 이 행사를 모두 준비했다는 사실은 믿기 힘들 정도"라고 말했다.
