Smartphones cause 119 headaches

Touch-screen smartphones are causing a surge of accidental 119 calls, Busan 119 said, as users inadvertently press the emergency dial button on their startup screens.

Some smartphones feature a touch button on their startup screen that automatically calls police or 119 fire and medical emergency services if pressed. The touch-screen button often works even when the mobile is locked.

Busan 119 said of the approximately 600,000 emergency calls it has received from January to June 2011, about 300,000 were accidental.

In an effort to explain the surge, authorities recently surveyed 79 people who have made more than 10 accidental calls. The survey found that 67 of the respondents said they had touch-screen mobile phones including smartphones.

Most respondents said that their phones accidentally called 119 in their hands or pockets. Some parents with young children said their babies pushed the emergency button while playing with the phone.

“With the rising number of smartphone users, the number of accidental 119 calls is drastically rising as well,” said Bae Jong-min, a Busan 119 official. “Due to the growing number of accidental dialing, we could miss calls from those who are in true need of our help. We want you to be more cautious when using your mobile phones.”

주머니 속 스마트폰 오접속…119 신고 급증

스마트폰 보급이 확산되면서 사용자도 모르게 눌러진 긴급통화버튼으로 인한 119신고가 급증해 소방당국이 골치를 앓고 있다.

경남도소방본부는 올해 상반기 119 신고전화 72만9천206건을 분석한 결과, 이 같은 오접속으로 인한 경우가 24만9천478건으로 전체의 34.2%나 됐다고 6일 밝혔다.

실제로 불이 났거나 구조구급이 필요한 신고는 10만8천427건(15%)에 불과했다.

경남소방본부는 119로 전화를 건 상대방이 응답하지 않는 경우를 오접속으로 분류한다.

대부분의 오접속이 일상생활 도중에 스마트폰이나 터치폰에서 발생하는 것으로 소방본부는 파악했다.

이재춘 경남도소방본부 119종합상황실 주무관은 "운동 중이나 걷는 도중 호주머니에 있던 스마트폰이 움직이면서 긴급통화버턴이 작동하거나 아이들이 부모 등의 스마트폰을 갖고 놀다 버턴을 잘못 눌러 119로 연결되는 경우가 많다"고 말했다.

그는 또 "전화를 받아보면 아이 목소리 또는 TV 소리만 들리거나 대화소리는 들리는데 응답을 하지 않을 때가 많은데 대부분 스마트폰 오접속과 연관이 있다"고 덧붙였다.

경남도소방본부는 오접속이 많아지면 실제로 긴급한 도움을 필요로 하는 시민이 신고를 할 수 없게 되는 만큼 스마트폰 사용자들도 주의해야 하지만 제조사들도 기술적인 보완을 해야 한다고 지적했다.
