Predatory Park finds goal, not win, in Kuwait

Arsenal forward Park Chu-young scored Korea’s goal against Kuwait yesterday (KST), his fourth in two World Cup qualifiers since Friday, but it was not enough to bag three points for Korea as the home side equalized in the second half.

The third-round regional qualifier for the 2014 World Cup ended in a 1-1 stalemate as Kuwait held off the Taeguk Warriors at the Friendship and Peace Stadium in Kuwait City, but Park’s performance raised expectations of him making a splash when he debuts in the English Premier League.

Park, 26, scored in the 8th minute off a pass from right-winger Nam Tae-hee after Sunderland forward Ji Dong-won tricked defenders by letting the pass go through his legs. The play enabled Park, who was in front of the penalty box, to rifle home for his 21st international goal at the expense of goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Khaldi.

But things took a turn for the worse eight minutes later when right back Cha Du-ri limped off with a thigh injury. Kuwait cancelled out Park’s goal in the 53rd minute when defender Hussain Fadel tapped home a loose ball after a pass out wide caught Korea asleep at the back. The ball was played across goal and a trio of players, including goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong, collided leaving Fadel with a simple tap in.

Determined not to leave shorn of a victory, Park, who also scored a hat trick against Lebanon on Friday, kept piling on the pressure but Al-Khaldi was on hand to keep the score tied.

Park’s goal was not the first against Kuwait by the former Monaco striker, who also found the back of the net five years ago in the last round of World Cup qualifiers to help Korea advance to its sixth straight Finals.

However this time around he had more experience on his side and also the captain’s armband, meaning that he was tasked with playing more of a supporting role on the wings as well as orchestrating attacking plays from midfield.

The hot weather, different pitch conditions and hostile stadium atmosphere were all thorns in the side for the visitors, but Park found time to flash his killer instinct and stretch his record to nine goals in 17 matches against Middle Eastern countries.

“I felt really tired, but I appreciate that other players took control of the game well,” Park told Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s daily newspaper. “The match was a good opportunity for our players to improve.”

Football experts predict Park will serve as understudy to Dutch striker Robin van Persie of Netherlands and Marouane Chamakh of Morocco while he competes for a position on the wings. He may make his debut when the Gunners play Swansea on Saturday.

“I will try to adjust at Arsenal and work hard to play in many games as I can,” Park said.

Meanwhile, after two qualifiers, Korea is leading the standings in Group B with four points. Kuwait, which won its first game 3-2 over the United Arab Emirates, also has four points but trails Korea in goals scored. Elsewhere, Lebanon beat the United Arab Emirates 3-1 on Tuesday to take third place.

Korea now has four qualifiers to play. The team is scheduled to host UAE on Oct. 11 and will travel there on Nov. 11. After playing Lebanon on Nov. 15, Korea plays its final qualifier against Kuwait on Feb. 29. “We will play better in February at home,” Park said.

　※장면② 7일 새벽(한국시간) 쿠웨이트에서 열린 2014년 브라질 월드컵 아시아 3차 예선 2차전. 전반 17분 오른쪽 윙백 차두리(31·셀틱)가 오른쪽 허벅지 부상으로 교체됐다. 한국은 박주영(26·아스널)의 선제골을 지키지 못하고 쿠웨이트와 1-1로 비겼다.

　두 장면엔 공통점이 있다. 첫째, 주전 윙백이 부상으로 물러난다. 둘째, 한국 수비가 갑자기 무너진다.

　윙백은 강팀이 되기 위한 필수 조건이다. FC바르셀로나(다니엘 알베스), 레알 마드리드(세르히오 라모스), 맨체스터 유나이티드(파트리스 에브라) 등 지난 시즌 우승컵을 들어 올렸던 팀엔 모두 강력한 윙백이 있다.

　압박 수비가 대세인 현대 축구에서 윙백은 공·수의 중심이다. 수비는 기본, 공격에도 깊숙이 가담한다. 상대 압박을 피해 공간을 파고들고, 없는 공간을 만들어내기도 한다.

　축구대표팀 조광래(57) 감독도 윙백의 중요성을 잘 알고 있다. 지난해 7월 대표팀 지휘봉을 잡은 그는 베테랑 이영표(34)와 차두리를 좌우 윙백으로 내세워 아시안컵에서 3위를 차지했다.

　이영표가 아시안컵을 끝으로 은퇴한 뒤 김영권이 뒤를 이었다. 김영권은 올림픽대표팀의 중앙수비수였다. 결과는 나쁘지 않았다. 김영권과 차두리를 좌우에 포진한 한국은 지난 6월 세르비아와 가나를 모두 2-1로 이겼다.

　문제는 김영권이나 차두리가 빠지면 순식간에 경기력이 떨어지는 점이다. 더 큰 문제는 대표팀에 적절한 교체선수가 보이지 않는 데 있다. 일본과의 경기에서 김영권 대신 박원재(27·전북)와 박주호(24·FC바젤)를 기용했지만 결과가 나빴다.

　쿠웨이트와의 경기에서는 차두리 대신 김재성(28·포항)이 뛰었다. 실점하는 장면에서 김재성은 골키퍼 정성룡(26·수원)과 엉켜 넘어졌다. 그 사이 쿠웨이트의 후세인 알리가 텅 빈 한국 골문에 공을 차 넣었다. 김재성은 소속팀(포항)에서 중앙 미드필더로 뛴다. 조 감독은 왜 그를 차두리 자리에 기용했을까?

　쿠웨이트에 원정간 대표팀의 교체선수 가운데는 정통 윙백이 없다. K-리그와 해외 리그에서 뛰는 자원이 적지 않은데, 조 감독은 윙백 자리를 미드필더로 대체한 이유를 충분히 설명하지 않았다.

　전문가들이 거론한 대표팀 윙백 후보는 홍철(21·성남)·윤석영(21·전남)·박주호·박원재 등이다. 박문성 SBS 축구 해설위원은 “김창수(26·부산)·이용(25·울산)도 대표팀에 불러 키울 필요가 있다”고 제안했다.

　한국은 3차 예선 초반 2경기에서 1승1무(승점4)를 기록했다. 최종 예선 진출은 가능할 것 같다. 그러나 최종 예선에서는 일본·호주·사우디 등 더 강한 상대를 만난다. 윙백 문제를 해결해야 한다. 부상은 언제든 일어날 수 있다. 더구나 3년 뒤에는 차두리가 34세가 된다. 믿을 수 있는 백업 멤버가 필요하다.

　한편 C조의 일본은 우즈베키스탄 원정에서 1-1로 비겼다. D조의 호주는 사우디아라비아 원정에서 3-1로 이겼다.
