냉동인간
18세기 미국의 정치가이자 과학자였던 벤저민 프랭클린은 인체의 사후 보존과 부활에도 관심이 많았던 모양이다. 어느 날 술병 속에 잘못 날아들어가 얼어붙은 파리 세 마리가 그의 눈에 띄었다. 파리들을 햇빛 속에 꺼내 녹여주자 그중 두 마리가 되살아나 날아갔다고 한다. 이걸 본 프랭클린은 친지에게 편지를 보낸다. “인간도 향유에 넣어 차게 해두면 장래에 소생할 것 아닌가. 100년 후의 미국을 보고 싶은 나도 술통 속에 담가져 100년 후에 소생하고 싶다.” 하지만 당시 과학기술로는 어림없다는 아쉬움도 토로했음은 물론이다.내가 한 영작

냉동인간의 창안자 에틴거가 엊그제 세상을 떠났다. 그의 시신은 과학과 의술의 발전으로 다시 소생할 것에 대비해 자신의 냉동보존연구소에 냉동보관된다고 한다. 이미 그의 어머니와 두 아내도 미래의 부활을 믿으며 냉동인간이 돼 있는 상태다. 냉동인간의 부활이 실현된다고 한들 그게 인류의 행복이 될지는 미지수다. 삶과 죽음의 경계가 모호해지고, 가치 기준이 다른 둘 혹은 그 이상의 시대를 사느라 혼란스럽기만 하지 않을까. 에틴거의 죽음과 시신 냉동보존 소식에 드는 단상(斷想)이다.
