Reality TV shows are emerging as a key revenue source for the nation’s three broadcasters and a gateway to success for local musicians.

Such is their power that even decades-old songs can become hits again overnight if they are featured on a show like MBC’s “Infinite Challenge” or “1 Night, 2 Days” on KBS.

Celebrity guests on these two shows are tasked with accepting different missions or going on short trips around Korea. A variety of songs are used for dramatic effect to punctuate their escapades. A recent singing contest organized by the producers of “Infinite Challenge” proved just how much clout the show wields over the nation’s music industry.

In this particular episode, seven male celebrities teamed up with professional singers and competed for a grand prize.

After the show aired, all seven songs found their way onto the best-seller lists of various music stores around the country. Within two days of the release of limited-edition albums featuring the songs, 60,000 copies were sold nationwide.

The contest has also turned two lesser-known musicians into stars: pianist and singer-songwriter Jung Jae-hyung, and two-member indie band 10cm. Both had small fan bases before participating in the show, but their prospects rose dramatically in its aftermath, as suggested by the fact that both appeared in TV commercials shortly after the show aired.

Singer-songwriter Lee Juck’s “Shall We Walk Together?” also shot to the top of the charts at domestic music stores after the song was featured in a February episode of “Infinite Challenge.” The song, originally released back in 2007, was used together with scenes of seven contestants trying their hand at Winter Olympic sports.

The show recently went one step further by hiring a composer to come up with a theme song entitled “Grand Final” for an episode in which participants are shown preparing for an international rowing competition last month.

In contrast, “1 Night, 2 Days” focuses more on indie music or old Korean songs of the 1970s and 1980s. As the main concept of the show revolves around a short trip in Korea by six male celebrities, it often mixes music with scenic shots of the local countryside to draw viewers in.

One episode entitled “Sentimental Romance” that aired last October had the celebrities move from destination to destination singing along the way. The show used 10 old Korean songs, including Cho Yong-pil’s “I Hope It Would Be That Way Now” and Kim Gwang-suk’s “The Place the Wind Blows To,” which were released in the 1970s and 1980s. It received rave reviews from audiences aged 30 to 60.

“There are no channels on TV for us to listen to old Korean songs, so this was a great opportunity to revisit some old classics,” said 41-year-old Park Ju-hyun, a diehard fan of the show.

Many songs by indie bands have also featured on “1 Night, 2 Days,” such as Bye Bye Sea and The Koxx. The latter provided as many as five songs for one episode last month, when the stars headed to a handful of Korean waterfalls.

While the reality shows have been praised for their ability to promote singers new and old, they have also drawn criticism for the influence they hold over the music market.

“We welcome the show’s ability to shed light on some [forgotten] songs, but the trend may encourage musicians to rely on these shows too much for exposure,” said culture critic Gang Tae-kyu.
