Alleged pro-North Korean Air pilot denies accusations

A Korean Air pilot under investigation on suspicion of violating the National Security Law denied engaging in pro-Pyongyang activities in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo.

The pilot, surnamed Kim, said that he neither praised North Korean leader Kim Jong-il nor posted pro-Pyongyang messages or publications on his blog, as prosecutors accuse him of doing. Prosecutors, who have been investigating more than 40 people suspected of being pro-Pyongyang activists, raided Kim’s home this week. Kim has been barred from leaving the country and suspended from work. Kim agreed to an hour-long telephone interview with the JoongAng Ilbo on Thursday.

Q. Why did you start the blog?

A. The prosecutors said I disguised my blog as a science blog in order to distribute several pro-Pyongyang photos, documents and video clips, but their claims about my online activities are all distorted because I actually started the blog to share information regarding alternative energy. I was really absorbed in the subject at the time (in 2001).

There are publications and posters praising North Korea and Kim Jong-il. When did you post them?

I posted them on the blog because they were new North Korean material that I’d never had. I didn’t think that other people could see and distribute them to other Web sites.

(At the end of the interview, however, Kim denied posting pro-Pyongyang posters and video clips on his blog and said they were posted by unidentified visitors.)

One of your posts says, “Praise the great leader Kim Jong-il.” Did you think it could be a problem?

(In an angered voice) I never wrote those kinds of phrases, but if it is on the page, it must have been included as part of the pictures or video clips that I posted. And the phrase, “My job is only as a financial supporter for making the juche [self-reliance] ideology come true,” isn’t my post either.

Prosecutors have asked your company to prohibit you from piloting in case you attempt to fly to the North. What is your reaction?

It is ridiculous. I don’t understand why they would think that. I have my parents, parents-in-law and my children in this country. Why do they think I would abandon my family?

Do you think you’re either a communist or a socialist?

I have nothing to say about that. I mean, I don’t even like those kinds of words. I will be questioned by the prosecutors, so it will be revealed [whether I’m a pro-Pyongyang person or not] when the probe is over.

Based on some of the posted materials, it looks like you don’t believe that the North is a dictatorship or suppresses human rights.

(In an angered voice) No one knows what the truth actually is in North Korea. I don’t believe things that I haven’t seen. We only hear news from the media, but who their sources are isn’t clear.

Did you really not know that your blog would be a problem?

Never. But I will take all responsibility for it if I have to. My family and I are in the middle of chaos after prosecutors swept through my home.

인터넷에 김정일과 북한 체제를 찬양하는 글을 올린 혐의로 검찰의 수사를 받고 있는 대한항공 김모(46) 조종사는 20일 “중국과 동남아 등에서 북한 인터넷 사이트에 접속해 북한 찬양 사진이나 포스터를 구해 올렸다”고 말했다. 그는 “북한 관련물을 혼자 일기장에 독백(獨白)하듯 개인 사이트에 올렸을 뿐 누가 보라고 한 것은 아니다”고 주장했다. 김씨는 이날 중앙일보와 한 시간여 동안 세 차례 전화 인터뷰를 하며 “북한이 독재국가인지 인권 탄압을 하는지 직접 살아보지 않아 모르겠다. (친북주의자인지는) 조사 과정에서 밝혀질 일이지 내가 말할 입장이 아니다”고 말했다. 김씨는 주로 국내선과 동남아·중국 노선을 운항했고, 검찰의 수사가 시작된 19일부터 기장 직무가 정지돼 서울의 자택에 머물고 있다.

-사이트는 왜 개설했나.

　“검찰은 내가 북한체제 선전 사이트를 에너지 관련 사이트로 위장했다고 했다. 왜곡이다. (2001년 처음 개설) 당시는 새로운 에너지에 심취해 관심 있는 사람들끼리 서로 연구 결과를 공유하려고 만들었다. 하지만 연구활동이 활발하지 않아 거의 활동이 중단된 사이트였다. 하루에 방문자가 열 명이 안 될 때가 많고 한 명도 없을 때도 있었다.”

　-‘위대한 수령 김일성 동지의 혁명사상으로 더욱 철저히 무장하라’는 포스터나 ‘빨갱이가 되기 위한 전제 조건’ 같은 게시글이 있다. 언제부터 올렸나.

　“새로 접하는 북한 그림이나 동영상을 보고 이런 것도 있구나 하는 신기한 생각에 1~2년 전부터 올렸다. 혼자 일기장에 독백하듯 (기록)한 것이지 누가 보라고 올린 것은 아니다.” (하지만 이후 통화에서는 “북한을 찬양하는 포스터나 사진·동영상을 직접 올린 적이 없다. 다른 사람들이 게시판에 올린 것”이라고 말을 바꿨다.)

-‘김정일 장군 만세’ 같은 북한 찬양 내용이 문제될 것이란 생각을 못했나.

　“직접 타이핑해 그런 글을 쓴 적이 없다. 사진이나 동영상을 캡처해 옮기는 과정에서 들어갔을지는 모르지만 직접 작성하지는 않았다. 또 ‘직장은 북 찬양을 위한 재정적 지원자’란 글이 있다던데 내가 쓰지 않았다. ”

　-일부에서는 비행 중 월북 우려도 제기됐다.

　“월북할 아무런 이유도 없다. 서울에 노부모와 처자식, 장인·장모가 다 있다. 가족을 버리고 북한에 갈 하등의 이유가 없다. 만약에 정 가고 싶다면 정상적인 경로를 통해 정부 허가 받아 가지 왜 쓸데없는 짓을 하겠나. (그런 말이 왜 나왔는지) 어이가 없다.”

　- 친북주의자 혹은 사회주의자라 생각하나.

　“드릴 말씀이 없다. 또 그런 용어 자체가 싫다. 검찰이나 경찰 조사 과정에서 밝혀질 것이다. 개인이 어떤 생각을 갖고 있는지는 자유이지 않나. 내 머릿속 생각을 꼭 말할 필요는 없다고 본다. 사회주의나 공산주의가 뭔지 모른다. 솔직히 자본주의도 확실히 모른다. 다만 서로 부족한 면을 채워가면서 행복하게 상호 공존하는 게 좋다고 생각한다.”

　김씨는 국가보안법 위반 혐의로 지난 6월 기소돼 재판을 받던 중 법정에서 “김정일 장군 만세”를 외쳐 논란을 빚은 황모(43)씨가 운영하던 ‘사이버민족방위사령부(사방사)’라는 사이트에도 회원으로 가입해 북한을 찬양하는 글을 썼다는 혐의도 받고 있다.

　-사방사에서는 언제부터 활동했나.

　“난 거기서 탈퇴했다. 가입한 것도 탈퇴한 것도 모두 지난해 일이다. 거기서 (북한이나 김정일을) 찬양하는 글을 올린 기억이 없다. ”

　-사이트의 북한 관련 자료를 보면 북한의 일인독재나 인권 탄압 등을 인정하지 않는 것인가.

　“(목소리를 높이며) 직접 가서 살아보지도 않았는데 어떻게 아나. 정치수용소나 독재체제 등은 언론 보도로만 알 뿐이다. 그런데 대개 정보의 출처가 불분명하더라. 남한체제에 유리한 것만 보도하는 것인지 실제 상황을 보도하는 것인지 내 눈으로 확인하지 못했으니 믿지 못하겠다.”

　-남한 사회는 어떻게 보는가.

　“불완전하다고 생각한다. 행복하게 살 수 있는 조건은 아니라고 본다. 어떤 사상이든 체제이든 100% 완벽하다고 생각하지는 않는다. 사람이 만든 이상 항상 불완전하고 부족한 면이 있다. ”

　-학교 다닐 때 운동권이었나.

　“(84학번인데) 공부만 하는 착하고 순진한 학생이었다. 운동권은 아니었다. 이후도 관심이 별로 없었다. 일이 이렇게 커졌지만….”

　-자신의 행동이 문제될 것이란 걸 정말 몰랐나.

　“1년 전에는 정말로 생각 못했다. (이번 사건이 터진 후) 처음엔 제정신을 못 차렸다. 가정 파탄 직전이다. 내 행동에서 비롯된 일이니 내가 책임져야 한다고 생각한다. 감수해야 할 부분은 감수하겠다.”

　김 조종사는 한국항공대 항공운항학과를 졸업하고 1991년 대한항공에 입사한 20년 경력(비행시간 8833시간)의 베테랑 조종사다. 주로 162석짜리 B-737기를 몰았다. 동료 기장들은 “평소 조용한 성격이었고 북한 관련 언급하는 걸 듣지 못했다”고 했다.
