Samsung sets new production record of 300M cell phones

Samsung Electronics produced 300 million cell phones this year for the first time since it launched its mobile phone business in 1988, it said yesterday. Samsung revealed that the total shipment volume passed this milestone in November.

Samsung, which only trails Nokia of Finland as the world’s top handset maker, is the first Korean handset maker to manufacture more than 300 million mobile phones in a 12-month period. This is equivalent to making 820,000 units a day, or more than nine a second.

Samsung’s handset business posted rapid growth as the company broke the 100-million-unit line in 2005 and 200 million units in 2009.

Samsung’s success was largely due to its having secured a full lineup of mobile phones including feature phones, touch phones and smartphones. The company also managed to roll out a succession of hit products, including the latest Galaxy smartphone series, domestically and also in the global market.
