Hit film ‘My Sassy Girl’ to be made into a drama

The hit movie “My Sassy Girl” (2001) will be made into a television drama, and the production company behind the show has launched a contest to find a scriptwriter.

The company, called Raemongrain, will accept entries from professional drama writers and amateurs, it said through its PR company on Jan. 11. The winning author will be awarded 10 million won ($8,615) and sign an exclusive contract with Raemongrain.

Once the best script has been chosen for the planned 16-part series, production will commence in the latter half of this year in collaboration with Shin Cine, the company that produced the original movie.

“We are awaiting the submission of fresh ideas, new concepts and fun contained in the scripts,” Raemongrain said. Entrants must submit scripts for two potential episodes to be considered.

The TV series will not necessarily follow the same plot as the movie, but it will be based on the same themes, according to the company. “My Sassy Girl” tells the story of a feisty and strong-willed young woman and a more restrained gentleman who have a strained relationship but eventually fall in love.

The romantic comedy launched the career of actress Jun Ji-hyun, who played the unconventional yet lovable female character.
