MOKPO, South Jeolla - Police arrested a teenage son for hiring a high school boy to kill his parents in order to collect the family’s insurance.

The Mokpo Police Precinct in South Jeolla said yesterday that they have arrested an 18-year-old boy surnamed Kim, unemployed, and a 15-year-old high school boy surnamed Lee, for attempted murder. The police said that Kim brought Lee to his house in Yongdang-dong in Mokpo City at 10:20 p.m. on Thursday.

As soon as Kim opened the door of the house, Lee rushed into a room where Kim’s 58-year-old father, a street cleaner, and 52-year-old mother were sleeping and began hitting them in the face.

The police said that the son blankly stared at his parents while they were being attacked.

The plan, however, failed when the father fought Lee off and restrained him.

The son called the police as soon as he saw Lee was captured. He then broke two windows in the house to make it look like a break-in and attempted robbery.

The police were suspicious of Lee’s motive as they were not able to find an exact reason for the brutal attack. The police pressed Lee until he confessed to the plan. The parents are being treated in a nearby hospital, but they are not in critical condition.

The police said Kim aimed to collect on 10 different insurance plans, including life and accidental insurance, which were under his parents’ name. He got Lee to join the scheme by offering him 600 million won ($516,000).

“They never took care of me,” Kim told the police during questioning. “They didn’t care when I was caught by the police for theft in the past.”
