Helping out the middle class
Half of the Korean adult population - exactly 50.1 percent - believe that they belong to the lower class, according to the latest survey by Hyundai Research Institute./ 현대경제연구원의 최근의 조사에 따르면 한국 성인 인구의 절반인 50.1퍼센트가 자신들이 저 소득층에 속한다고 믿고 있다 한다/ The middle class usually refers to households which earn 50 percent to 150 percent of the median income on the overall income scale./ 일반적으로 중산층은 전체 소득 규모에서 중위소득의 50퍼센트에서 150퍼센트의 소득을 얻는 가구를 말한다/ Considering that 3.5 million won ($3,080) was the median income last year, those earning from 1.75 million won to 5.25 million won a month - who took up 64 percent of all income earners - should be categorized as middle class, and the rest, 15.2 percent, as members of the lower class./지난해의 중위소득이 350만원인 것을 감안하면 월 소득 175만원에서 525만원을 버는 64퍼센트가 중산층에 속하며 나머지 15. 2퍼센트는 저소득층에 속하는 셈이 된다/What the survey suggests is that many among the middle class believe that they are poor or getting poorer./ 조사가 제시하는 것은 다수의 중산층이 자신들이 가난하고 가난해지고 있다고 믿는다는 사실이다/ A study by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs also showed similar findings, with 32 percent of the middle-class group considering themselves below that category./ 한국 보건사회연구원의 연구 또한 유사한 결과를 보여주고 있는데, 중산층 가구의 32퍼센트가 자신을 저소득층으로 간주하고 있다는 것이다/ To put it simply, the middle class is rapidly losing confidence./ 간단히 말해서 중산층이 급속도로 자신감을 상실하고 있다는 것이다/
The loss of confidence by the middle class, which plays a pivotal part in the economy - both in production and consumption activities - may raise serious social repercussions beyond our control./ 생산과 소비활동 양 측면에서 경제적으로 중추적인 역할을 하는 중산층이 자신감을 상실해간다는 것은 우리의 통제를 넘어서 심각한 사회적 영향을 초래할 수도 있다/ When people go into self-denial, it is mostly because they feel materially and financially insecure./ 사람들이 자기를 부정한다는 것은 대다수가 자신들이 물질적으로 경제적으로 불안정을 느끼기 때문이다/
The ominous signs are not difficult to find./ 불길한 조짐을 찾기는 어렵지 않다/ Those who said they have fallen into poverty singled out decreased income, increased debt, and job insecurity as reasons for their belief./ 자신들이 가난으로 떨어졌다고 말하는 사람들은 소득의 감소, 부채의 증가, 일자리 불안정 등을 그들의 믿음을 위한 이유로 지목했다/ Worse, they gave up hope./ 더 나쁜 것은 그들이 희망을 버렸다는 것이다/ The majority - a whopping 98.1 percent - predicted that their circumstances would get worse./ 절대 다수인 98.1퍼센트가 그들의 상황이 더 악화될 것으로 예상하고 있다는 것이다/ Those in their 20s cited job insecurity, while those in their 30s singled out debt burden./20대는 일자리 불안정을, 반면 30대는 부채의 짐을 지목했다/ Those in their 40s blamed the high cost of educating their children and those in their 50s looked at retirement as an everyday battle./ 40대는 자녀의 높은 교육비를 탓했으며 그리고 50대는 퇴직으로 시달리고 있는 것으로 나타났다/
The enormous pain and anxiety of the middle class could lead to its collapse any time./ 중산층의 막대한 고통과 불안이 언제든 중산층의 붕괴를 초래할 수 있다/ The middle class has already been stretched thin by credit cards and the global financial crisis./ 중산층은 이미 신용카드와 글로벌 금융위기로 얇아졌다/ An irregular work force will likely form a new poverty group and may soon be joined by baby-boomers after their post-retirement businesses go bust./ 비정규직이 새로운 가난한 그룹에 합류할 가능성이 높고 베이비부머도 은퇴 후의 사업 파산으로 인해 곧 합류할 수도 있다/
The middle class is dying and needs immediate care./ 죽어가고 있는 중산층을 위한 즉각적인 보호가 필요하다/ This year’s presidential candidates must develop concrete measures to sustain and restore the broken middle class instead of vying to increase welfare benefits and economic justice./ 올 해의 대통령 후보들은 복리후생과 경제정의를 앞세우기 보다는 무너진 중산층을 유지하고 복구할 수 있는 견실한 방안을 내 놓아야 한다/ What middle-class people need most of all are price stability and jobs./ 중산층 사람들이 가장 필요로 하는 것은 물가 안정과 일자리이다/ Those may sound like tired items on a campaign menu, but in times like these, they are the bread and butter that can help sustain the middle class./ 이러한 것들이 캠페인 메뉴에서는 식상한 것처럼 들릴지 모르지만 오늘날과 같은 상황에서는 그것이 중산층을 유지하는데 도움이 되는 버터를 바른 빵이라는 사실이다/
