Land disputes need logical answers
The escalating tension between Asia’s two largest economies over territorial disputes has reached an alarming level and is raising concerns about public safety, regional security and the global economy./ 영토 분쟁을 둘러싼 아시아의 두 경제대국 사이에 긴장이 위험 수위에 도달하면서 치안과 지역안보, 세계경제에 관한 우려를 낳고 있다/ The largest-ever anti-Japan demonstrations erupted across major cities in China over the weekend, with rowdy Chinese protesters violently attacking Japanese missions, business buildings and factories./ 소란을 피우는 중국 시위대들이 격렬하게 일본의 파견 지점, 기업건물과 공장을 공격하면서 지난 주말동안 중국의 주요 도시에 걸쳐 최대 규모의 반일 시위가 일어났다/The three East Asian majors - Korea, China and Japan - are engulfed in heated and bitter disputes over ownership of uninhabited islets in waters they share that bear still-sensitive scars from Japan’s wartime and imperialistic excess./동아시아의 주요 3국인 한국, 중 국, 일본은 함께 공유하고 있는 수역에 있는 무인도의 작은 섬의 소유권을 놓고 서로 열을 내며 격렬한 논쟁에 휩싸여 있는데, 중국과 한국 사람은 여전이 일본의 제국주의적 침탈에 대한 민감한 상처를 가지고 있다/
Tensions between China and Japan turned violent after Japan last week announced it would purchase and nationalize the islands, known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese./ 중국과 일본의 긴장이 폭력으로 바뀐 것은 일본이 지난 주 일본어로 센카쿠, 중국어로 다오위다오로 알려진 섬을 구매하여 국유화하겠다고 발표했기 때문이다/ The move immediately prompted Beijing to send patrol ships to the waters to assert its sovereignty./그러한 움직임으로 즉시 중국은 자치권을 주장하기 위해 해당 수역으로 순시선을 보냈다/ Tokyo explained the purchase was necessary to prevent the islands from falling into the hands of an ultra right-wing Japanese politician who vowed to buy them from private owners./ 일본 정부는 개인 소유로 되어 있는 그 섬을 매입하겠다고 선언한 일본의 극우파 정친들의 손에 넘어가는 것을 방지하게 위해 일본 정부가 그것을 구매했다고 설명했다/
The Chinese responded angrily and declared Diaoyu and adjacent waters a maritime base and stationed six naval vessels in the area./ 중국은 이에 반발해 다오위다오를 기준으로 영해기선을 선포하고 여섯 척의 해경감시선을 그 지역에 투입했다/ If Japan matches with its own military presence, the two countries may be locked into a physical clash on the sea./ 만약 일본이 자신의 군사력으로 경쟁을 한다면 두 나라는 그 해역에서 물리적 충돌을 할 수도 있다/
Some nationalists in China are stoking anti-Japanese sentiment as revenge for Japan’s war brutalities even though China is now ahead economically./중국의 일부 애국주의자들은 이제 중국이 경제적으로 앞서가고 있는 힘을 통해 일본의 전시 잔학성에 대해 복수하자며 반일감정을 부추기고 있다/ Japan more or less sparked the regional conflict by dillydallying on past issues and exploiting territorial claims for political purposes./ 일본은 과거사 문제에 관해 꾸물거리며 영토문제를 정치적인 목적으로 이용하면서 지역적인 갈등을 더 부채질하고 있다/ China also is trying to direct public fury toward the Japanese to deflect complaints about leaders during its once-in-a-decade power transition./ 중국 또한 10년간의 권력 이전 동안의 지도자에 대한 불만을 다른 방향으로 바꾸기 위해 대중의 분노를 일본으로 향하게 하려고 하고 있다/
The strife between the world’s second- and third-largest economies, our closest neighbors, could potentially jeopardize the peace and stability of our region./우리의 긴밀한 이웃인 세계에서 두 번째, 세 번째 경제대국 사이의 불화는 잠재적으로 우리 지역의 평화와 안정을 위태롭게 할 수 있다/ Japan is at the same time waging a similar campaign against our own territory of Dokdo./ 일본은 동시에 우리 영토인 독도에 대해 유사한 캠페인을 벌이고 있다/ The angry Japanese could mimic the Chinese and threaten us with similar violent means./ 화난 일본인들이 중국을 흉내를 내어 유사한 폭력 수단으로 우리를 위협할 수 있다/
We need to brace ourselves for provocations./ 우리는 도발에 대해 우리자신을 지킬 준비가 필요하다/ But it is more important that governments and people in East Asia work to control emotions and rely on logic when making important decisions about international disputes./ 그러나 국제적인 분쟁에 관한 중요한 결정을 할 때는 동아시아의 정부와 국민이 감정을 자제하고 논리에 따르는 것이 더욱 중요하다/ The governments must regain their better senses as soon as possible./ 정부는 가능한 한 빨리 그들이 더 나은 감정을 회복하도록 해야 한다. It is nonsense to go to a war over a group of uninhabited volcanic rocks./ 무인도인 화산 돌섬을 두고 전쟁을 한다는 것은 말도 안 되는 일이다/
