Korea elects first woman president

Korea yesterday was on course to elect its first woman president, the conservative ruling party's Park Geun-hye, eldest daughter of former military strongman Park Chung Hee.

박정희 전 대통령의 장녀인 박근혜 새누리당 대선후보가 어제 대한민국의 첫 여성 대통령으로 당선이 확실시 됐다.
The 60-year-old scored 51.9 percent of the votes as of 10 p.m. yesterday, maintaining her narrow lead over liberal rival Moon Jae-in of the opposition Democratic United Party, who had scored 47.7 percent at the time, when 57.3 percent of the ballots were counted.

57.3%를 개표한 어제 밤 10시 현재 박 후보는 51.9%를 득표해 47.7%의 지지를 받은 진보진영 통합민주당 문재인 후보를 근소한 차이로 앞서고 있다.
Yesterday's victory will put Park back in the Blue House, the nickname of Korea's presidential compound, where she spent her teenage years and also served as acting first lady after her mother's assassination in 1974. Park left the Blue House after the 1979 assassination of her father by his own spy chief.

이번 대선 승리로 박근혜 후보는 10대 청소년기를 보냈고 어머니가 암살당한 1974년 이후 퍼스트 레이디 역할을 맡으며 지냈던 청와대로 다시 돌아가게 됐다. 박 후보는 1979년 아버지가 안기부장에 의해 암살된 후 청와대를 떠났다.
Korean voters chose the conservative stands of Park in the midst of concerns about an economic slowdown or recession and security challenges by North Korea. While her opponent Moon promised major reforms of the country's conglomerates and its established political order, Park's pledges were more about stability and a "grand national unity."

경기침체와 북한의 안보위협에 대한 불안 속에서 박 후보의 보수적인 정책을 선택했다. 문재인 후보가 재벌개혁과 정치개혁을 약속한 반면, 박 후보는 안정과 사회 대통합에 좀 더 무게를 두었다.
According to a KBS-MBC-SBS exit poll announced at 6 p.m., right after the polls closed, Park scored 50.1 percent while Moon earned 48.9 percent. Park was narrowly leading the match against Moon within the margin of error in the exit poll. After the exit polls were announced, the mood at the conservative ruling party quickly became sanguine. Around 9 p.m., major broadcasters began naming Park as the definite winner and officials cheered loudly.

투표를 마감한 오후 6시에 발표된 지상파 방송 3사 공동 출구조사에 따르면, 박근혜는 50.1%를 득표하고 문재인은 48.9%를 득표할 것으로 예측됐다. 출구조사에서 박 후보가 오차범위 내에서 근소하게 문 후보를 이기는 것으로 나타났다. 출구조사가 발표된 후 보수 여당은 재빠르게 승리 기대감으로 들뜬 분위기에 휩싸였다. 오후 9시쯤 주요 방송사들이 박 후보의 당선이 확실시 된다고 보도하자 당직자들은 환호성을 질렀다.
