Samsung starts construction on Silicon Valley R&D center

Samsung Electronics on Wednesday began construction of its research and development center in Silicon Valley, San Jose, California.

The Apple rival is spending $300 million on a 10-story building set for completion in 2015. The campus will accommodate a 2,000-strong semiconductor research work force. The layer cake-shaped building will have such facilities as a gym, cafeteria and garden.

“The new R&D building in Silicon Valley will serve as Samsung’s brain headquarters in North America and we will start recruiting top-notch researchers timed with the completion of the campus,” said Samsung in a release.
