‘Coup’ takes over charts

G-Dragon

Just days after K-pop star G-Dragon’s “Coup d’Etat, Part 1” came out with a bang, “Coup d’Etat, Part 2” has topped charts around the world.

As of yesterday morning, the second EP hit No. 1 in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia.

“Coup d’Etat, Part 2” is also at No. 1 on the iTunes hip-hop charts for the United States and made it to No. 23 overall.

It also hit No. 1 on the hip-hop album chart in Canada and the Netherlands, and made the Top 10 in Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Spain and Sweden.

“’Coup d’Etat’ is a flare signal that behind G-Dragon of Big Bang there is an artist trying to branch out and discuss the pressures of living life as one of Korea’s most in demand stars,” said Billboard in its review of the album on Wednesday.

The review also noted G-Dragon’s many collaborations with Western artists, including Missy Elliot, Diplo and German DJ Boys Noize, have created a “smooth R&B-disco mash-up packing alien-like harmonies, yet still radio-friendly songs.”

Part 1, which was released on Monday, still tops the iTunes album chart in Vietnam.
