Koreans remain driven by ‘lookism’
However, movies and television shows sometimes project romantic or erotic fantasies about feet. Secretly touching another person under the table with one’s foot is a typical scene suggesting an extramarital affair, eroticism or a tryst. In the movie “Bungee Jumping of Their Own,” Lee Byung-hun ties Lee Eun-ju’s shoelaces, and it became a textbook romantic scene. In “The Contact,” Jeon Do-yeon has a crush on her friend’s fiance and secretly tries on his shoes. On the latest hit television drama on SBS, “You Came From the Stars,” high heels appear as an important prop.
The KBS drama “Boys Over Flowers” had the most famous line about high heels, which was taken from the original Japanese comics. As Gu Hye-sun, whose family runs a dry cleaners, gets ready to attend a fancy party for the first time, she is told, “Nice shoes are the most important accessories. A fine pair of shoes will bring you to a fine place.”
British actress Emma Thompson added a memorable moment for high heels at the Golden Globes on Jan. 12. She walked the red carpet barefoot with her daughter. As a presenter, she appeared onstage barefoot, holding a pair of heels with red soles. “I just want you to know, this red, it’s my blood,” she said. She was also not wearing any shoes when she received an award for best actress at the National Board of Review last week.
Thompson said that she took off the heels as a feminist statement, but the social pressure to keep a certain body image is not limited to women. Men feel that they should be at least 6 feet tall and opt for thick insoles. Members of girl groups consume only 1,000 calories a day to maintain their slender figures and undergo challenging choreography with six-inch heels.
Thompson’s performance was delightful, but unfortunately, Koreans are still obsessed with “lookism,” regardless of gender and age. Korean society will have to bleed more, because even I don’t feel confident about ditching my high heels.

발은 우리 몸에서 가장 천대받는 부위다. 의학 정보는 손보다 발이 훨씬 깨끗하다고 가르치지만, 발에 대한 인상을 바꾸지는 못한다. 하루 종일 제 무거운 몸을 이고 다닌 수고로움을, 주인조차 잘 알아주지 않는다. 발레리나 강수진의 울퉁불퉁한 맨발 정도라면 모를까. 맨발은 감동보다 결례일 때가 많다. 반면 영화나 드라마에서 로맨틱하거나 에로틱한 판타지를 담아내는 곳으로 돌변하는 게 발이기도 하다. 식탁 아래 남 몰래 발로 상대를 터치하는 장면은 불륜, 에로티시즘, 치정의 대표적 이미지다. 영화 ‘번지점프를 하다’에서 이병헌이 이은주의 풀린 운동화 끈을 매어주는 장면은 로맨스의 교본이 됐다. ‘접속’에서 친구의 약혼자를 짝사랑하는 전도연은, 그가 벗어놓은 큼지막한 구두를 몰래 신어보며 설레어 했다. 한창 인기를 끌고 있는 SBS 드라마 ‘별에서 온 그대’에도 하이힐이 주요한 소품으로 등장한다. 주인공 커플이 본격적으로 얽히는 계기다. 하이힐에 대한 최고의 명대사는 KBS 드라마 ‘꽃보다 남자’에 나왔다. 원작인 일본 만화의 대사다. 세탁소집 딸 구혜선이 처음 부자들의 파티에 가기 위해 치장하는 장면에 나온다. “여자에게 좋은 구두는 가장 중요해. 왜냐면 좋은 구두는 좋은 곳으로 데려다주니까.” 맞는 말이다. 화려한 명품 하이힐이 그녀를 노동 현장으로 데려갈 리 없으니까. 하이힐은 전시되는 육체의 상징이자 노동할 수 없는 신발, 육체노동하지 않는 이들의 신분 표식이니까 말이다. 그 하이힐의 이미지에 영국의 지성파 배우 엠마 톰슨이 명장면 하나를 더 추가했다. 12일 미국 골든글로브 시상식에서다. 딸과 함께 맨 발로 레드카펫을 밟은 그녀는 맨 발로 무대에 올라 시상했다. 굽이 15cm쯤 되는 명품 하이힐을 들고 나왔다. 굽이 달린 붉은 밑바닥을 가르키며 “이 붉은 색은 나의 피”라고 말한 뒤 구두를 집어던졌다. 지난주 전미비평가협회상 시상식에도 맨발로 나와 최우수 여배우상을 받은 그녀다. 톰슨은 그 때 “페미니스트로서의 의견을 밝히려고 하이힐을 벗었다”고 했지만, 사실 육체에 대한 사회적 압박 때문에 제 몸을 학대하거나 변형하는 것은 더 이상 여성만의 문제가 아니다. 이른바 ‘180cm 이하 루저남’ 발언 이후 '깔창'은 젊은 남성들에게도 필수다. ‘1000 칼로리 식단’ 등으로 연일 미의 표준을 제시하고 있는 우리의 걸그룹들은 15cm는 능히 되는 킬힐을 신고도 격한 안무를 선보이고 있다. 톰슨의 하이힐 퍼포먼스는 한없이 통쾌하지만, 안타깝게도 아직도 남녀노소 루키즘(외모지상주의)을 숭상하는 우리 사회는 흘릴 피가 더 많아 보인다. 나만 해도 이 글을 쓰고도 당장 하이힐에서 내려올 자신이 없으니 말이다. 양성희 문화스포츠 부문 부장대우
