Committee for unification proposed

박근혜 대통령은 어제 오전 취임 1주년을 맞아 발표한 대국민 담화에서 통일을 준비하는 새로운 정부기구를 설치하겠다고 밝혔다.
The speech, which stretched more than 20 pages, was delivered in more than 40 minutes in the presence of ministers, presidential senior secretaries and Blue House correspondents. Park wore a khaki jacket similar to one she wore during the inauguration ceremony a year ago, a gesture symbolizing that she intends to deliver on her inaugural resolutions.

박 대통령은 장관들, 수석비서들과 청와대 출입기자들이 참석한 가운데 20페이지 분량의 담화를 40분 넘게 읽었다. 박 대통령은 취임할 때의 약속들을 이행하려는 의도를 상징하려는 듯 1년 전 취임식 때 입었던 옷과 비슷한 카키색 자켓을 입었다.

*against expectations: 기대와는 달리, 예상과는 달리
담화 내용은 1월6일 신년 기자회견에서 박 대통령이 처음 언급했던 경제혁신3개년 계획에 관한 구체적인 실행계획일 것이라는 예측이 지배적이었었다. 그러나 예측과는 달리, 박 대통령은 신년 기자회견에서 잠재적 “대박”이라고 표현했던 통일을 이번에 다시 강조했다. 대통령 재임 2년 차에 북한이 박근혜 정부의 우선순위 정책으로 떠올랐다는 의미로 해석될 수 있다. 통일에 관한 언급 이후에 경제정책을 설명했다.
“Unification will offer a great stepping-stone for the Korean economy to leapfrog into yet another dimension,” she said. The comment suggested that Park is no longer confining North Korea to the realm of national security and diplomacy but is making it part of a comprehensive vision for South Korea’s future.

박 대통령은 “통일은 한국 경제가 한 단계 도약하기 위한 큰 계기를 마련해 줄 것이다”고 말했다. 이런 언급은 박 대통령이 북한을 더 이상 국가안보와 외교 분야로 한정하지 않고 한국의 미래를 위한 종합적인 비젼의 일부로 인식하고 있는 것으로 해석할 수 있다.
Blue House sources said establishing a framework and composition for a unification committee was ordered by the president while she prepared for her first anniversary speech. The foreign affairs and national security office of the Blue House is in the middle of deciding the size and composition of the committee.

청와대 소식통들은 대통령이 취임 1주년 담화문을 준비하면서 통일준비위원회의 체계와 구성을 지시했다고 말했다. 청와대 외교수석실과 국가안보실이 통일준비위원회의 규모와 구성을 결정하는 작업을 하고 있다.
