Trade pact with Canada reached

협상을 시작한 지 9년 만에 한국과 캐나다의 자유무역협정(FTA)이 어제 타결됐다. 한-캐나다 FTA는 한국에게는 자동차와 섬유제품 수출을, 캐나다에게는 소고기와 다른 천연자원 수출을 진작시킬 것으로 기대된다.
The agreement makes Korea the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to have such an agreement with Canada, the world’s 11th-largest economy and a member of the Group of Eight, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
산업통상자원부에 따르면, 아시아-태평양 지역에서는 한국이 처음으로 세계 11위 경제규모를 갖고 G8 회원국인 캐나다와 FTA를 맺었다.
“Both Korea and Canada are old friends and are valued partners with complementary economic structures,” said President Park Geun-hye in a press conference at the Blue House following a summit with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

스티븐하퍼 캐나다 총리와 정상회담을 한 뒤 청와대에서 가진 기자회견에서 박근혜 대통령은 “한국과 캐나다는 오랜 우방국가이고 상호보완적인 경제구조를 가진 소중한 교역 상대국이다”고 말했다.
“The conclusion of the free trade agreement is very meaningful,” she said, “In that it will form an institutional foundation to further expand reciprocal cooperation including trade and investment.”

박 대통령은 “이번 FTA 타결은 무역과 투자를 포함한 상호협력을 더욱 확대하는 제도적인 토대를 마련했다는 점에서 매우 의미 있다”고 말했다.
“This agreement is a great deal for both of the countries,” said Harper. “It will create jobs and opportunities for Canadians today and, just as importantly, more generations to follow.”

하퍼 총리는 “이 FTA는 양국에 모두 대단한 일이다. 이 FTA는 캐나다의 현재 세대뿐만 아니라 미래 세대들에게도 일자리와 기회를 창출할 것이다”고 말했다.
Negotiations with Canada were the longest ever for an FTA by Korea. Initial talks began in July 2005, followed by 13 rounds through March 2008. Negotiations were halted in April 2009 after Canada challenged Korea’s ban on imports of Canadian beef six years earlier at the World Trade Organization.

한국이 맺은 FTA 중에서 캐나다와의 협상기간이 가장 길었다. 2005년 7월에 협상을 시작해서 2008년 3월까지 13차례 협상을 벌였다. 캐나다가 6년 전에 한국이 캐나다산 소고기 수입을 금지한 것을 WTO에 제소하면서 협상은 2009년 4월 중단됐다
Korea instituted the ban in 2003 after an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly called mad cow disease. Korea resumed Canadian beef imports in January 2012, and the trade talks resumed last November.

일반적으로 광우병으로 알려진 소의 해면뇌병증이 발생하자 2003년에 캐나다산 소고기 수입 금지를 시작했다. 한국은 2012년 1월 캐나다산 소고기 수입을 재개했고, FTA 협상은 지난해 11월 재개됐다.
