Yang Hyun-suk

Amid anger and frustration over government officials’ inept reaction to the tragedy of the Sewol ferry, Yang Hyun-suk, head of the leading K-pop powerhouse YG Entertainment, donated 500 million won ($480,769) to help families of the victims of the tragedy.

YG manages famed K-pop artists such as Psy, Big Bang and 2NE1.

According to local media outlets yesterday, YG decided to donate the money after an urgent meeting among executives of the company.

An official of the agency said that Yang in particular felt deeply sorry for the families, and he “burst into tears whenever he saw the news coverage.”

As soon as Yang learned about the Sewol, which capsized off the southwestern coast last week, he told every YG artist to halt their promotional activities. Local media said that Yang has since contemplated how to reach out to the victims, many of whom were high school students from Ansan, Gyeonggi.

YG has been actively engaged in community service through the years, including the Dream Gift campaign in collaboration with Yonsei University’s Severance Hospital, which helps children suffering from heart disease.

The company said it will pay close attention to the outcome of the tragedy so that the families of the victims can be sincerely helped.
