The way forward
A parent representing the families with children missing on the ferry Sewol yesterday delivered some positive news on the current status of the rescue team’s search in the sunken ship, where hundreds of high school students were trapped./ 어제 세월호에서 자녀를 잃어버린 가족을 대표하는 한 부모는 수백 명의 고등학생들이 갇혀있는 침몰한 배에서 하고 있는 구조팀 수색의 현 상황에 관해서 일부 긍정적인 소식을 전달했다/ “From today, the rescue team will kick off a full-fledged search./ 오늘부터 본격적인 수색이 시작될 것입니다/ So far, divers have broken 17 windows of the ship to increase the number of guidelines from five to 10 to accelerate their rescue.”/ “지금까지 잠수요원들이 구조를 활발하게 하기 위해 가이드라인을 5개에서 10개로 늘리려고 17개의 창문을 깨뜨렸습니다/ After a middle-aged man asked, “When will they enter the large cain where over 30 students presumably gathered?”/ 한 중년 남자가 “아마도 30명 이상의 학생이 모여 있을 거라고 보이는 대형 객실에는 언제 들어갑니까? 라고 묻자/ the representative said, “According to the authority, visibility is almost zero in the ship. I can’t say if that would be possible.”/ 그 대표는 “당국에 따르면 배에서는 가시성이 거의 제로입니다. 언제 진입할 수 있을지는 말할 수 없습니다”라고 말했다/The families are tired but are still desperate to find out what happened to their children./ 가족들은 피곤했지만 여전히 자녀들에게 무슨 일이 일어났는지 밝혀내기 위해 애쓰고 있다/ Some who visited a makeshift morgue about 100 meters (328 feet) away from their encampment at Jindo’s gymnasium to try to identify bodies suddenly burst into tears after confirming their worst fears, and their six days of hopes, however diminishing, were extinguished for good./ 시신을 확인하기 위해 진도 체육관에 마련된 캠프장에서 약 100미터 정도 떨어진 임시 영안실을 방문한 사람들은 얼마나 무서웠을까하며 갑자기 울음을 터뜨리며 좌절했으며 좋은 일이 일어나기를 기다렸던 6일간의 희망을 접기도 했다/
Families who remained in the gymnasium earnestly read the descriptions of unidentified bodies posted on a board./ 체육관에 남아 있던 가족들도 게시판에 게재된 신원미상 시신에 관한 설명을 진지하기 읽었다/ When a body was accompanied by an ID, the families were instantly summoned to see if the remains were indeed those of their children./ 시신의 신원이 확인되면 남아 있는 시신이 실제로 그들의 자녀인지 확인하기 위해 즉각 그 가족이 호명된다/
In the meantime, volunteers from around the country rolled up their sleeves to help the families by handing out hot meals, blankets, underwear, medicine and, as hard as they are to find, some words of comfort./한편 위로의 말을 찾기가 힘들지만 전국에서 온 자원봉사자들은 가족들에게 따뜻한 식사와 담요, 속옷, 약품 등을 건네며 팔을 걷어 부치고 있다/ But the lethargic disaster management was proven over and over again./ 그러나 무기력한 재난 관리 시스템은 또 다시 반복되기만 했다/ Families wonder what the government was up to at the time of such a huge tragedy./ 가족들은 그러한 참사가 일어날 때까지 정부는 무얼 했는지 답답해 한다/ It turned out, the ferry and the Jindo Vessel Traffic Service had a terrible communication problem despite the urgency of the situation./ 긴급 상황임에도 불구하고 세월호와 진도 해상교통관제센터 사이의 교신에 상당한 문제가 있었던 것으로 밝혀졌다/ Government ministries and agencies also acted in perfect disharmony and lost vital time for rescue./ 정부 부처와 기관들 또한 완전히 엇박자로 행동하며 구조를 위한 생명유지에 필요한 시간을 놓쳤다/
But now is the time for everyone to extend their sympathies to the bereaved families and those with missing children./ 하지만 지금은 모든 사람이 유족과 자녀를 잃어버린 사람들을 위로해야 할 때다/ We must also applaud all the brave rescue efforts by military and civilian divers and encourage them to save any of our sons and daughters who may still be struggling to survive the cold waters./ 우리는 또한 군과 민간 잠수요원들의 용감한 구조노력에 박수를 보내야 하며 차가운 물속에서 생존하기 위해 분투하고 있을지도 모를 우리의 아들딸을 구하기 위해서라도 그들을 격려해야 한다/
On a poster on the wall of the gym are words of hope, such as, “We will wait for a miracle,” “Return to your families,” and “We’re all waiting for you.”/체육관 벽에는 “우리는 기적을 기다린다”, “가족 품으로 돌아오라”, “우리 모두 너희를 기다릴 것이다”와 같은 희망의 말들이 붙어 있다/ But the clock is ticking./ 그러나 시간은 흘러만 간다/ Let’s pray for their miraculous return./ 그들이 기적적으로 돌아오기를 기도하자/ We must not repeat such a tragedy ever again./ 우리는 다시는 이런 비극을 반복하지 말아야 할 것이다/
