Thousands of local residents, organization leaders and athletes gather at a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday for the opening of the main stadium in Incheon for the 17th Asian Games to be held from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4. The five-story Incheon Asiad Main Stadium, with 61,944 seats, stands on 113,620 square meters (28 acres) of land, and construction cost more than 490 billion won ($478 million). Organizers asked the Korea Record Institute to verify the number of attendees, as it could be the largest gathering of people to take part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. By Byun Sun-goo
