Collective awakening needed
A man-made disaster occurred again./ 인재가 또 다시 발생했다/ A fire at Goyang Intercity Bus Terminal in Gyeonggi on Monday left 6 people dead and injured more than 40./ 월요일 고양시에 있는 고양버스종합터미널의 화재로 6명이 사망하고 40명 이상이 부상을 입었다/ The terminal houses a large discount outlet, movie theater, shopping mall and start-up assistance center./ 그 터미널에는 대형 할인점, 영화관, 쇼핑몰과 창업지원센터가 들어가 있었다/ If the fire had occurred at busy hours like lunchtime - instead of 9 a.m. when it’s not so crowed/ 만약 그 화재가 사람이 붐비지 않은 오전 9시가 아니라 점심때와 같이 사람이 붐비는 시간에 발생했더라면/ - it could have led to a much bigger disaster./ 더 큰 재앙을 초래할 뻔 했다/ Though the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, sparks from welding works are believed to be the cause./ 비록 정확한 화재원인은 알려져 있지 않지만 용접작업의 불꽃이 원인인 것으로 보인다/ If workers had gotten rid of flammable materials or had fire-prevention equipment, they could have averted the accident./ 만약 근로자가 인화성 물질을 치워놓거나 화재예방 장비를 갖추어 놓았더라면 그러한 사고를 방지할 수 있었을 것이다/ A similar fire at a construction site in Guro Digital Complex also left more than 10 people dead or injured six months ago./ 6개월 전 구로디지털단지에 있는 건설현장에서 유사한 화재로 10명 이상이 사망하거나 부상을 입기도 했다/Since the Sewol ferry disaster, our entire society has been in deep grief./ 세월호 참사 이후 우리 사회는 비탄에 빠져 있다/ Even though sense of safety should have improved after that, accidents are still happening./ 그 후 안전의식이 개선되었나 싶었는데 사고는 계속 일어나고 있다/
A recent investigation by the Ministry of Security and Public Administration confirmed that there are as many as 684 defective elevators at public facilities across the country./ 최근 안전행정부가 조사한 바에 따르면 전국의 다중시설에 있는 엘리베이터 중 684기가 결함이 있는 것으로 확인되었다/ Public institutions and private companies have not learned a lesson from the Sewol tragedy./ 공공기관과 민간 기업들이 세월호 비극을 통해 교훈은 배우지 못한 것이다/ A large fire at a storage house in Busan last week also triggered an explosion of butane gas and chemicals and swallowed up six buildings in just an hour./ 지난 주 부산에 있는 물류창고의 대형 화재 또한 부탄가스와 화학약품으로 인해 대형 폭발이 있었고 한 시간 만에 여섯 개 건물을 삼켜버렸다/
Irrefutable evidence of lax safety attitudes was the cause of the Seoul subway crash that happened only two weeks after the Sewol tragedy./ 느슨한 안전의식에 대한 부인할 수 없는 증거는 세월호 참사가 일어난 후 단 2주 만에 발생한 서울 지하철 추돌사고만 봐도 잘 알 수 있다/ On the very day the Goyang terminal caught fire, the police announced the results of their month-long investigation into the transport disaster./ 고양 터미널 화재사고가 발생한 바로 그날 경찰은 교통재난에 관한 한 달간의 수사결과를 발표했다/ Their conclusion was too obvious:/ 경찰의 결론은 너무 분명했다/ Seoul Metro staff didn’t report the malfunctioning signal system nor did they fix the problem./ 서울메트로 직원이 오작동 신호체계를 보고도 하지 않았고 그 문제를 해결하지도 않았다/ If such negligence continues, a much bigger catastrophe could occur down the road./ 만약 그러한 태만이 지속된다면 더 큰 재난이 앞으로 발생하게 될 것이다/
To prevent safety-related accidents, we must pay the price by changing old systems./ 안전관련 사고를 방지하기 위해서 우리는 낡은 시스템을 바꾸는 비용을 지불해야 한다/ Korea’s death rates from industrial accidents are nearly the worst among OECD members/ OECD회원국 중에서 산업재해로 인한 한국의 사망률은 거의 최악 수준이다 - almost five times higher than the OECD average/ OECD 평균의 거의 다섯 배가 될 정도로/ - due to the strange structure in which big companies assign jobs to contractors at cheap prices,/ 이는 대기업들이 저렴한 비용에 일을 하청업자에게 주는 이상한 구조 때문이다/ who then hastily do their work without safety awareness./ 그래서 안전의식을 무시하고 일을 서둘러 하는/
The structural safety problem should be a national agenda item before a bigger price - and more time - is demanded to revamp the system./ 구조적인 안전 문제는 시스템을 개조하기 위해 더 많은 비용과 더 많은 시간이 필요하겠지만 국가적으로 해결해야 할 아젠다여야 한다/ Despite a strong commitment to safety after the Sewol tragedy, we still have trouble putting it into action./ 세월호 참사 이후 안전에 많은 노력을 기울이고 있음에도 불구하고 우리는 여전이 실천을 해야 하는 문제를 안고 있다/ Unless we are truly awakened, another huge disaster could hit us anytime soon./ 우리가 진심으로 각성하지 않는 한은 또 다른 대형 재난이 곧 우리에게 닥칠 것이다/
