Voters split their judgment in local polls

여당 새누리당과 야당 새정치연합이 어제 지방선거 17개 광역단체장 선거에서 절반씩 나눠서 이긴 것으로 나타났다. 새누리당은 8군데 광역 자치단체장 선거에서 이겼고, 세월호 참사에도 불구하고 새정치연합에게 전통적으로 지지지역인 부산에서 시장 선거를 패배하는 최악의 사태는 모면했다.
The Saenuri had won in Busan, Incheon, Ulsan, Daegu mayoral and Gyeonggi, North and South Gyeongsang, Jeju provincial elections. The NPAD had won nine seats in Seoul, Daejeon, Gwangju, Sejong City mayoral and Gwangwon, North and South Chungcheong, North and South Jeolla provincial elections.
새누리당은 부산, 인천, 울산, 대구 시장과 경기, 경북, 경남, 제주 도지사 선거에서 승리했다. 새정치연합은 서울, 대전, 광주, 세종 시장과 강원, 충북, 충남, 전남, 전북 도지사 등 9곳에서 승리했다.
Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon beat off a re-election challenge by the Saenuri’s Chung Mong-joon by one of the widest margins in the main races yesterday, 56.01 percent to 43.1 percent.

박원순 서울시장은 새누리당 정몽준 후보를 큰 표 차이(56.01% 대 43.1%)로 누르고 재선에 성공했다.
With Park’s victory, he emerges as a front-runner in the 2017 presidential election. Serving as Seoul mayor can be a stepping stone to the presidency, as in the case of former President Lee Myung-bak.

박원순 서울시장 당선자는 재선 성공으로 2017년 대통령 선거에서 차기 선두 주자로 떠올랐다. 이명박 전 대통령의 경우에서 그랬듯이 서울시장 자리는 대통령으로 가는 디딤돌이 될 수 있다.
Park was elected after former Mayor Oh Se-hoon resigned from his post in August 2011. Oh staked his mayoral post on a referendum vote on free lunch programs, which he opposed but Seoul citizens favored.

박원순은 2011년 8월 당시 오세훈 서울시장이 사퇴한 뒤 서울시장에 선출됐다. 오세훈 당시 서울시장은 무상급식 반대 주민투표에 시장자리를 걸었었다.
In Incheon mayoral election, Yoo Jeong-bok defeated sitting mayor Song Young-gil of the NPAD with 49.9 percent to Song’s 48.1 percent. In Gyeonggi election, Saenuri’s Nam Kyung-pil won the governorship with 50.4 percent to NPAD candidate Kim Jin-pyo’s 49.5 percent.

인천 시장 선거에서는 새누리당 유정복 후보가 49.9% 대 48.1%로 새정치연합의 송영길 현 인천시장을 이겼다. 경기 도지사 선거에서는 새누리당 남경필 후보가 새정치연합의 김진표 후보를 50.4% 대 49.5%로 당선됐다.
