Hyundai Heavy Industries getting into air compressors

Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world’s largest shipbuilder, said yesterday it is entering the air compressor market.

The company said that in 2011, it started to develop air compressors based on technologies used in manufacturing industrial pumps, turbochargers and gas compressors.

HHI said it has developed 1,500-horsepower and 2,500-horsepower air compressors and will add 400 to 900-horsepower capacity compressors this year.

HHI supplied 1,500-horsepower air compressors to its affiliate Hyundai Mipo Dockyard last month and now aims to sell the product to companies outside the group.

The company said the global air compressor market is estimated at $3.1 billion, and it aims to secure orders worth $13 million this year.
