Soldier shoots himself, is captured
A military ambulance carries an Army sergeant who shot himself in the upper chest yesterday in a suicide attempt after a daylong standoff with the military on a mountain in Goseong County, Gangwon. 전방 전초(GOP)에서 총기난사로 동료 사병 5명을 살해하고 이틀 동안 도주하던 탈영병이 어제 자살 기도 후 생포됐다.
The suspect, identified by the surname Lim, shot himself in his upper chest at around 2:55 p.m. yesterday on a mountain in Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong County, Gangwon, with a K-2 standard-issue rifle. After killing five of his fellow soldiers and injuring seven Saturday night, Lim fled from the frontline General Outpost (GOP) in Goseong with the rifle.

탈영병 임모 병장은 오후 2시55분쯤 강원도 고성군 현내면 야산에서 갖고 있던 K-2 표준 지급 소총으로 자신의 가슴 윗부분을 쐈다. 임 병장은 토요일 밤에 동료 사병 5명을 살해하고 7명에게 부상을 입히고 소총을 갖고 전방 GOP에서 탈영했다.
Lim’s suicidal act came after a day of efforts by the military to persuade him to surrender. His father and older brother were also at the scene of the standoff to plead with the suspect to turn himself in.

임 병장의 자살기도는 군이 하루 동안 자수하라는 설득을 벌인 뒤에 발생했다. 임 병장의 아버지와 형이 대치 현장에 가서 임 병장에게 투항을 권유했다.
“At around 11:25 a.m., [Lim’s] father and brother arrived at the site and began talking [with Lim],” said Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok during a press briefing yesterday, shortly after Lim’s capture. “But the soldier did not do [what his relatives requested] and hurt himself.”
임 병장을 체포한 직후 가진 기자회견에서 김민석 국방부 대변인은 “오전 11시25분쯤 임 병장의 아버지와 형이 현장에 도착했고 대화를 시작했다. 그러나 임 병장은 투항 권유를 듣지 않고 자살을 시도했다.”고 말했다.
An official at the Ministry of Defense said the suspect, 22, remained conscious while being transported to Gangneung Asan Hospital in Gangwon on a military helicopter, though he suffered blood loss from the self-inflicted wound.

국방부 한 관계자는 임 병장(22)이 자해 부상으로 출혈이 심했으나 군 헬기로 강원도 강릉아산병원으로 이송하는 도중에는 의식이 있었다고 말했다.
The suicide attempt ended a 23-hour standoff in the far northeastern border town of Hyeonnae-myeon, about seven kilometers northeast of the scene of the shooting rampage. During the manhunt, one platoon leader was shot in the arm allegedly by Lim on Sunday. Another soldier was shot in a friendly fire incident at dawn yesterday.

총기난사 현장에서 동북쪽으로 7 킬로미터 떨어진 국경 인접 마을인 현내면에서 23시간 지속된 대치상황은 자살기도로 끝이 났다. 일요일에는 탈영병 수색 도중 임 병장이 쏜 것으로 보이는 총탄에 소대장이 맞아 팔을 다쳤다. 또 다른 병사는 어제 새벽 아군이 쏜 오인사격에 맞아 부상을 입었다.
