Groundbreaking ceremony held for Ulsan power plant
S-Oil, Cheil Industries and KD Power Technology yesterday had a groundbreaking ceremony in Ulsan to begin construction on a low-pressure steam power plant with a capacity of 16.4-megawatts using waste heat generated from S-Oil’s Ulsan petrochemical factory. While S-Oil provides the basic source of generation, Cheil Industries (formerly Samsung Everland) will build the power plant and KD Power Tech, an affiliate of Kyungdong City Gas, the main supplier to Ulsan and Yangsan, South Gyeongsang, will be in charge of distribution.
The project stems from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s campaign to promote eco-friendly technology at industrial complexes, into which the government put 80 billion won ($78 million). The Ulsan waste heat power plant aims to generate electricity for about 5,400 households in the region, resulting in 9.1 billion won of profit every year.
