Aug 26,2014The brutalities of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have reached a climax./ 이라크 레반트 이슬람 국가 무장집단의 잔혹함이 극이 달하고 있다/ The radical militant group, which aspires to establish a theocratic state ruled by Islamic law across Iraq and Syria,/이라크와 시리아 일대에 이슬람 율법이 지배하는 신정국가를 세우겠다는 급진적 무장집단은/ posted a shocking video clip on YouTube last week in which the graphic death of American photojournalist James Wright Foley was captured./ 미국인 사진기자 제임스 라이트 폴리를 잔혹하게 살해하는 장면을 담은 동영상을 유튜브에 올렸다/ After the footage was released, the UN Security Council condemned the “heinous and cowardly” killing of a journalist and issued a warning against the radical group./ 그 장면이 배포된 이후 유엔 안전보장이사회는 기자의 살해는 “악랄하고 비열한” 행위라고 규탄하고 급진적인 집단에 대해서 경고했다/ The council said it “must be defeated” and that “the intolerance, violence and hatred it espouses must be stamped out.”/ 안전보장이사회는 “무장집단은 반드시 물리쳐야 하는 대상”이며 그들이 신봉하는 이민족에 대한 배척과 폭력, 증오는 근절해야 한다고 말했다/ The UN Security Council urged the international community to cooperate in bringing those responsible for the cruel homicide to justice after mourning the tragic death./ 유엔 안전보장이사회는 폴리 기자의 참혹한 죽음을 애도하며 그 잔인한 살인에 대해 책임을 묻기 위해 국제사회가 협력할 것을 촉구했다/

In regard to such a strategically important region, however, our government has only promised to provide $1 million in humanitarian aid for the northern Iraqi refugee crisis./ 하지만 이처럼 전략적으로 중요한 지역에 대해 우리 정부는 이라크 북부 난민 지원을 위한 인도적인 구호로 백만 달러를 제공하기로 약속했을 뿐이다/ It is time for the government to offer assistance befitting the world’s 14th-largest economy and its status as an OECD member nation./ 이제 정부는 세계 14위 경제대국과 OECD 회원국의 신분에 걸 맞는 지원을 해야 할 때다/ The measure would not only raise the image of our country, it would also safeguard our core interests./ 그러한 조치는 우리나라의 국가 이미지를 높일 뿐만 아니라 중요한 이익을 지키는 길이다/ A timely contribution to the international community can help strengthen our diplomatic leverage on the global stage as well./ 또한 국제 사회에 대한 시의적절한 기여는 글로벌 무대에서 우리의 외교적 영향력을 강화하는 데도 도움이 될 수 있다/ The government must remember the axiom: “You don’t forget a friend who helped you at your worst time.”/ 정부는 “어려울 때 도와 준 친구를 잊지 않은 법”이라는 격언을 명심해야 한다
