Sankei’s double standards

Japan’s Sankei Shimbun apologized for carrying an advertisement for a book that claims the Holocaust was a fabrication after a Jewish rights group protested. In addition to publishing an apology, the daily also delivered a letter of apology to the U.S. Jewish rights organization under the name of the newspaper’s president.
On Nov. 26, Sankei carried a full-page advertisement titled “Internet Journalist Investigating the Scheme of the Jewish Dictatorship State of the United States” in an edition circulated in the Tokai-Hokuriku region. It then contained a text written by blogger Richard Koshimizu and his three anti-Semitic books. He argues that the Holocaust was a “myth,” and that the 2011 earthquake and tsunami had been deliberately set off by the U.S. military. In addition to these absurd claims, he insists that Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin and Hitler were Jews.
Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and a rabbi, sent a letter of protest on Dec. 4. “The Simon Wiesenthal Center protests in the strongest terms possible Sankei Shimbun’s sellout of its journalistic responsibilities to the Truth for a few yen. By providing space in your newspaper for such libelous and baseless accusations, your newspaper helps validate hatred and anti-Semitism,” he wrote.
Then, the public statement by Takamitsu Kumasaka, president of the conservative newspaper, was published on Dec. 6.
Sankei’s Washington bureau chief also visited Cooper and delivered the letter of apology in person. “It is extremely regrettable that such disreputable content was published and was delivered to our readers. I deeply apologize to our readers and to every member of the Jewish community,” it said.
Sankei’s apology is quite different from how it responds to reports about Korea. The newspaper has made inflammatory claims such as “tale-diplomacy is a national trait” and “comfort women are anti-Japanese tools even after death.” And these claims were published not in an advertisement but in their articles.
Sankei made a courteous apology to the Jewish rights group, but it does not care about insulting Koreans. In the United States, the Jewish community has a powerful influence on politics, the economy, media and culture. Sankei is so submissive to the powerful Jewish community but is so cruel in hurting its neighbor with a tragic history. What does Japan have to gain by Sankei’s beating of Korea? Deriding Korea does not make Japan any greater. A newspaper that rudely claims “it is questionable whether reporting on the relationship of a single president is slander” does not make Japan great. Media with consistent standards and dignity make a country great.

일본 산케이(産經)신문이 독일 나치 정권의 유대인 대량 학살(홀로코스트)을 거짓이라고 주장한 책의 광고를 실었다가 유대인 단체의 항의를 받고 재빨리 사과했다. 신문에 사과문을 실은 것으로도 부족했는지 사장 명의의 사과 서한을 미국의 유대인 단체에 인편으로 전달했다. 산케이는 지난달 26일 도카이(東海)·호쿠리쿠(北陸) 지역에 배달되는 신문에 ‘인터넷 저널리스트가 유대인 독재국가 미국의 모략을 파헤친다’는 제목의 전면 광고를 게재했다. 광고는 인터넷 블로거인 리처드 코시미즈의 기고와 그가 쓴 유대인 비판 서적 3권에 대한 소개를 담았다. “홀로코스트는 신화였고 2011년 일본 대지진은 미국 군부에 의해 야기됐다”는 황당한 주장과 함께 “처칠· 루즈벨트·스탈린·히틀러는 유대인이었다”는 내용도 있다. 이에 대해 국제 유대인 인권단체 시몬 비젠탈 센터의 부소장이자 랍비인 에이브러험 쿠퍼가 지난 4일 산케이에 항의 서한을 보냈다. 서한은 “시몬 비젠탈 센터는 가장 강한 어조로 산케이신문이 진실을 추구하는 저널리즘의 책임을 몇 푼의 돈(a few yen)에 팔아 넘긴 데 대해 항의한다. 당신의 신문이 이 같은 중상 모략의 근거 없는 주장에 지면을 제공해 증오와 반유대주의를 정당화하고 있다”고 비판했다. 그러자 산케이는 6일 신문에 구마사카 다카미쓰(熊坂隆光) 산케이 사장 명의의 사과문을 실었다. 산케이의 워싱턴 지국장 등이 쿠퍼를 찾아와 구마사카 사장의 사과 서한을 전했다. 서한엔 “우리는 비판을 심각하게 받아들이고 엄격하고 솔직하게 다루겠다”는 문구가 담겼다. 산케이의 사과는 평소 한국에 대한 보도 태도와 대조된다. 산케이는 한국에 대해 ‘고자질 외교는 민족적 습성 탓?’, ‘위안부는 죽어서도 반일(反日)의 도구’라는 선동적인 주장을 펼친 바 있다. 광고도 아닌 기사를 통해서다. 산케이는 유대인 단체의 항의에는 예의를 갖춰 사과하면서도 한국인들을 자극하는 데선 아랑곳하지 않고 있다. 미국에서 유대인은 정치·경제·언론·문화 등에서 막강한 영향력을 행사한다. 힘센 유대인에겐 약하면서 이웃나라 한국의 쓰라린 상처에는 막무가내로 소금을 뿌리는 이유가 궁금하다. 산케이의 ‘한국 때리기’로 일본이 무엇을 얻을 수 있을지도 의문이다. 한국을 소인국으로 만든다고 일본이 대인국이 되는 게 아니기 때문이다. 대인국은 남의 나라 대통령을 놓고 무례하게 “독신 대통령의 남녀 관계 보도가 명예훼손인지 의문”이라고 말하는 언론이 아니라 일관된 잣대와 품격을 지닌 언론이 존재하는 나라에서 나온다. 워싱턴=채병건 특파원
